vesuvius27
Hello, I am going to be upgrading my computer. I am having a hard time selecting a video card. My choices are limited, so here they are: SLi, Dual nVidia GeForce 9800GT 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB Obviously, ATI Radeon HD 4850 seems like a dumb choice when it's the same price as a 4870. I cannot select another card, so please restrict yourself to these choices. My Blog - Fishing 82/
Chaise
I'd go with dual NVIDIA. That way if one card goes south, you have a decent backup. And of course SLI rules. ~~Chaise91~~
OldJoe
ATI 4870. Sbrideau
I'd go with Nvidia for the reason already stated and also for the reason that Ati drivers suck, despite them making stronger cards. The cards are nothing without good drivers.
Nadril
ATI 4870. Nothing to add here. 4870 is vastly superior to two 9800GT's.
Dracion1
Hiya Ves :D Despite my preference for Nvidia cards and their somewhat superior drivers (Don't forget support for PhysX and CUDA), the 4870 is easily the most powerful out of all of those. Depends what you like though. "In the beginning, the universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move." Mylez
Nvidia cards are more suited to gameplay. Personally, I think there's more performance to be gained from 2x 9800GT. However, some may disagree. ATI cards are more developed for video playback, but still handle gaming extremely well. ATI software seems better IMO. With many more options than NVIDIA, yes I do own both ATI and NVIDIA cards. From my experience NVIDIA are more clockable and can take more stress. ATI are smoother, more stable, run cooler, are slightly cheaper and easier to use (software wise). Ultimatly they are all good, and it's down to personal preferance.

It's not a personal preference really man, HD4870 blows two 9800GT's out of the water (and 9800GT's are really just beefed up 8800GT's, where the HD4870 can go toe to toe with the GTX280 in some extreme cases). Plus keep in mind that not all games are going to take advantage of both 9800GT's.
vesuvius27
Thanks everyone. I guess I probably should have said that I won't be gaming much, if at all, with the PC. Price is not the issue, either (buying prefab, all cost the same). I'm just looking for the best performance in using Photoshop, Flash, and movie playback. On a somewhat related note, what's the difference between a TN monitor and an IPS monitor. I'm looking at two monitors with the same size and almost the same price, one is TN and one is IPS. P.S. Hiya Drac. How is your new machine treating you? My Blog - Fishing 82/
Dracion1
I'd go for IPS since you're not going to be gaming much. A TN monitor has faster response times but the viewing angles and colour quality aren't as good as IPS. I decided to wait till summer before I get my new PC. If I had it now I wouldn't get any revision done in time for my exams in May/June :P "In the beginning, the universe was created. However, after seeing some benchmarks I see now that the Radion HD 4870 is something special. :D
OldJoe
8800GT and 9800GT doesn't perform any different, slightly less heat on the later one maybe. Mylez, i think you had a 8800GTS 320mb before? Of course the 9800GT blows it out of the space. But the 88 and 98gt aren't different except a couple of things.
