that doesn't answer my questions...

when:for the past two years and still continuing.

what: they beat the [cabbage] out of kids they deem as being emo.

why: It's mainly caused by ignorance, and not liking things that are different from the norm. especially in a country less civilized(to a certain extent) like mexico.

Article Excerpt

From: Wired Blog Network

By: Alexis Madrigal

A series of attacks on dyed-hair, eye-makeup-wearing emo kids began in early March when several hundred people went on an emo-beating rampage in Querétaro, a town of 1.5 million about 160 miles north of Mexico City.

The next week, shaggy-haired emo teenagers were harassed again by punks and rockabillys in the capital, prompting police protection and a segment on the TV news. Most recently, a Mexican newspaper reported that metal heads and gangsters have warned Tijuana's emo kids to stay away from the town's fair next month.

Music-based subcultures have permeated Mexico's major cities for decades, fueled by constant migration from rural cities. But only in the past year have emos begun to make their presence felt in the streets. In response, many of the established so-called tribus urbanas like punks and metalheads are responding with violence. The emo-punk battles are reminiscent of earlier subculture fights among various factions, like the Hell's Angels fighting hippies at the Altamont Music Festival or the Mods taking on the Rockers.

But while videos of Mexican teenagers with pompadours advancing on equally baby-faced emo rockers seem like scenes from a south-of-the-border version of John Waters' Crybaby, there are ugly undercurrents to the story.

First, by some accounts, the emo subculture is identified with homosexuality in Mexico. As Mexico City youth worker Victor Mendoza told Time.com: "At the core of this is the homophobic issue. The other arguments are just window dressing for that."

"What do you do when you are confronted with a question mark about sexuality in Mexico?" Arellano said. "You beat it up."

Many of the attacks have been planned, or at least fomented, on violently anti-emo websites like Movimiento Anti Emosexual, which features videos of physical violence sprinkled liberally with anti-gay sentiment. Last.fm's Anti Emo Death Squad group has almost 4,000 members.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how the world ends...

Beating kids that are already depressed? That is OBVIOUSLY the best decision...

Emo =/= depressed, even though they often go hand in hand.

Emo is short for emotional (or emotion). Kids who are emotional are called Emo. Kids who like black are goth.

So I guess depression is one emotion. There are others that can cause kids to be emotional.

Emo is not short for emotional :wall: It went from a genre of music to a copy-cat of being goth, except emo kids hurt themselves instead of other people.

Small summary in English.

OK.

In early 2008, emos got mainstream. Everyone wanted to be emo. Mexico City was an emo-zone. As most "urban tribes" emos needed to find a place to claim theirs. They found the Glorieta de Insurgentes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlgorID5k-0&feature=related) and stayed there. Other urban tribes started to view them, and they realized that emos were getting stuff from other tribes. (the "dark" look from goths, the clothing from skaters, music from punk etc..)

And the fact that people said that "emos" had nothing to contribute to the overall culture. Also, the Glorieta was widly used by skaters to well, skate. And when emos invaded it, skaters had to go as they were to many.

So they now had metalheads/punks/skaters/goths/skas angry at them. They were pissed, but then it happened, media saw what was happened, and hell broke loose.

Kristoff, which runs a popular show which answers questions and other stuff. What happened is that someone mailed him. Telling him that what he tought on the emo fad that was going on. He said something like this:

"I just want to tell something: emo is [bleep]ing bs. What are emos? Emos is something for 15 year old girls, who just got hairy you know where. They are EMOtional because they love the singer on some crap band. Not because they like their music, number 1. Number 2, is it necessary to create a whole new genre to express emotions, i mean, don't we have enough with Death Metal? Is it not sufficient with Punk? Is it not enough with *Camila, Sin Bandera, Jose Jose? Is it necessary to create a new genre that says, dude, everyone else is wrong, emotionally that doesn't fill us. [bleep]ING [cabbage], kids. There is no movement, there is no way of thinking, there are no musicians. You confuse punk ,hard rock, screamo, you mix every currents just to give a meaning to your stupid crappy movement. There is no movement"

Before you jump to say something, let me tell you something first. Punk and other tribes are taken VERY seriously in Mexico, small bands like *Panteon Rococo, Ska-P, Molotov and other bands are very political. They were born in the 80's where Latin American society was VERY closed against others in the world. In the 80's there were almost no rock concerts in general. Why? Because they talked about being free, and it included anarchist, chaotic and sexual themes. Punk, metalheads and ska bands had to live in the underground. That's why these bands now are in touch with their fans. Because those fans helped them carry equipment. They got drunk with them, and they escaped the police together when they needed to.

Why all that? Because Mexico is a very Christian country. That and in the 80's and 90's the PRI party was running the country. They [bleep]ed up big. People were angry and they needed something to help them express what they felt. They wrote about social injustice, about segregation, about politics and what they felt. That pissed alot of conservative people on the government. People got very identified with other people on their current (punk, ska etc..) So it's VERY serious business here. :!:

Now, that little thing that Kristoff said got alot of people inspired. People were running rumors that everyone was meeting at the Glorieta to show emos who's the boss. They were angry that emos had media attention and that they were "accepted", while everyone else was segregated on the 80's and had to fight the power to get respect. It eventually happened, about 800 people showed up. Between skaters/goths/metalheads/skas/skinheads/rockers/darkets they started to fight and they charged straight to the Glorieta against emos. They were hit hard. Same happened in Queretaro, news report appeared:

About 2 days later, Kristoff said this:

"Before starting this program i want to clarify something, I [bleep]ing hate people like you. What happened? This show is about having fun, a form of entertainment, if you use what we do here as a way to get together you bunch of [bleep]ers and beat the crap out of three poor little kids (three emos were almost killed on Queretaro), three [bleep]ing kids. You know what? One: You have very little balls you [bleep]ers. Two: If you are so cool and [cabbage] to beat the crap out of them, let's see you idiots, go with Maras Salvatruchas you suckers, let's see how you all end up-- Or with reggeatoneros (a form of rap and reggae popular on latin america), but why do they beat up emos? They beat them up because emos won't defend themselves, they are inside their little [bleep]ing world! Leave them, you idiots. What are the [bleep]ing balls you got? To get everyone and beat up three little kids. What the [bleep] did the little guys did to you? "They took the Glorieta" How the hell do they took it? Were they carrying weapons or something? They just go there and seat, dude. This [cabbage] that they want to do in Mexico City dude (actual word is "we", used alot by people here to refer someone) because, of course! We are taking the [bleep]ing example of those idiots in Queretaro, dude! And what are we doing? "IF YOU SEE AN EMO THIS SATURDAY, KILL HIM!" that's very stupid. Hey, let me tell you something that happened in the 80's when your parents were [bleep]ing, people hated poor people. You know what they do? The got in groups and grabbed baseball bats. When they saw one, the [bleep]ed him, to death! Why? Because they were "cleaning Mexico", that's the level of stupidity that's going on here! Every idiot that went there, let me tell you something. I have always said I may not agree with what you think, but i would die [bleep]ers, i would die to defend your right to express it.

As you can see, this is serious. Also, Kristoff always talks like that, he is brutally honest and swears when he wants, when people ask him, he says "It's my [bleep]ing show, and in my [bleep]ing show, i can do everything i want, got that?"

After that media gave attention to Kristoff, and emos told the news that he was inciting violence against them. Marches for peace and confrontation with the police and other tribes continued. Telehit, the channel that Kristoff works for (which is owned by Televisa, the biggest T.V. studio on Mexico) made a special debate of 3 hours, where they invited emos and government representatives. Called "ID: Emos" the program ran for 3 hours straight on Telehit and on Televisa. Many people watched it and even more media attention was gathered. Emos accused Kristoff of inciting violence, he said he is not sorry of what he said, but he agreed he may have worded it a bit harsh. It ended in an agreement. "Respect"

This sort of things continued, people used Youtube to upload videos of emos being beat up. A big "Peace & Respect" march from emos was organized in the Chopo (a big marketplace dedicated to the underground community of urban tribes) 500 emos attended and when they were infront of the Chopo, the peace agreement broke and punks attacked emos, again, they won and emos were sacred.

Small incidents are still occurring, but it has mostly died out, i suspect it will rise again.

Also, to the guy who says homosexuality si the issue, that's not true. Puto ([bleep] in Spanish) is a common insult here. And one can be led to believe that they also hate homosexuals. Not true (but i agree that some people hate gays)

I can't believe how many idiots there are in this thread.

First of all, let me clear some things up.

1) Emo kids dont hurt themselves, attention seeking morons do.

2) For those of you saying it doesn't stand for emotional, it does, although its short for emotional hardcore.

3) It isn't copying goth, it branched off of punk which is basically where goth came from as well.

4) Mexico is so corrupt that I don't see why they would even try to stop this, the drug wars are way more extreme than this.

Second of all, how is spacheco still on these forums? It's so obvious he's a troll, especially when he could have googled this and found everything he wanted to know.
