Good idea, we should hire cheap labor consisting of 5 year olds in Indonesia and have them do all out character's dirty work like mining. We can pay them a competative salary, like 5 cents a day. Nike and Hanes might get pissed that were using their work force though.

*shrug* Right or wrong, good or bad, it's happening. Virtual currencies are being farmed in sweatshops and then sold for real cash, characters are being leveled by other people in return for money.

And my question still stands; If both the virtual and the real currency can be counted in time, what's the difference? Who's going to have the most well-developed social life, the guy who plays for 8 hours during a week, or the guy who works for 4 and pays someone else to play for him? The guy who can't "see the difference" between virtual and real money actually has four more hours to spend partying.

(Personally, I think paying someone else to play your character is idiotic - I mean you pay ten bucks a month and then have someone else play for you, hello? - and buying gold is like cheating in Monopoly.)

As for playing RS better then getting plastered? To a point perhaps but realize...

Of course it's to a point, it's about balance. But to paraphrase what I said last august, why couldn't an MMORPG be a part of that balance? Why would it have to be an either-or?

Um..cybersex over the real thing?! You've got to be joking!

Sorry, just had to get that out there  Anyways, I don't think gaming will become as extreme as you described although I'm sure many people would enjoy that. I understand that there are alot of insecure people in the world. Whether they are just geeks, shy, obese, w/e it may be. But no matter what kind of person you are there will always be other people like you that you share common interests with. Yes, you could just be online buddies with them but I wouldn't consider it 'living' until you actually went out in 'the real world' and experienced it.

I've never had social problems. I play all sports offered at my school and start on all of them (varsity). I'm friends with everyone at school. I make good grades. I DO play video games and RS but it never takes up the majority of my time. BUT even though I have all this going for me I still am just human. I still have to go out in the world and meet people and interact with them. Sometimes it goes smoothly but others it just plain flops  This happens to everyone, not just shy, obese, nerdy, etc....people.

*Ramble over*

I know I would NEVER trade my real world life for virtual reality. It's impossible to replicate the true emotions you experience in the real world over a game.

*ramber really over this time*

supdarklinkel1.jpg

that could very well be the future, sure it would be a very sad future, but hey monkey see monkey do.

n0valyfe in Runescape plays Runescape 10 hours a day, no offence to him but living isn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t as fun as playing a game to him.

my version of the future generation of gaming is this: a single MMORPG which gives you these goggle things, which when you put them on let you see the world of gaming, you do not need to be fit in the real life to walk around as you physically do not move, your fingers can be as fat as you like because there is no keyboard or mouse, everything is controlled by your own brain.

in this game you cannot be harmed, you can choose to disappear if you do not wish to be humiliated in this game, if someone is annoying you simply mute them so that you cannot hear them.

all you would need for food and water is one of those beer hats they have, except it is connected to a jug of water so you can drink wile you play, also you could have a tube that connects to you where food is pumped through, you would get all the protein, iron, vitamins, foliate etc. you need because it would all be in the food.

you would not have to leave your chair because to earn money to pay the rent and electrical bills you would simply give a portion or the virtual money to the companies that supply you with food, water, electricity and rent.

But how would all this electricity and food and water get into you house?

robots.

humans will marvel when they create the perfect virtual human to carry out all that labour, without pay.

but if no one ever leaves their chair how would our population continue?

there is an argument that there is no such thing as "dying of old age" what would happen if we had a cure for every disease, would we be immortal?

however, if we cured all our diseases then something new came around, we would all be stuffed because our bodies aren̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t used to protecting us from viruses and such, the drugs do it.

there is a solution to this, do not cure the common cold and a few other minor sicknesses this way our body will know how to protect itself from anything new that comes around, that is if something does come around.

for this reason it would not be a perfect world because you could still become sick from a cold to keep your body ready for any other viruses that may come around.

you may think it is silly that we would not cure all the diseases if we knew how to, but if you have ever watched war of the worlds, or various other movies, the other race isn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t used to our diseases and all die, now say that our robots haven't picked up all the viruses and then one comes around, the entire population would be wiped out because the body cannot overcome it, it doesn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t know how.

my two cents

btw this is a very good topic, whoever made that article could write a book about it.

also, thank you for bumping this old topic

and finally, i believe that this sort of thing will happen, but not in my lifetime.

i finally quit runescape to play world of warcraft. i play on frostmourne, alliance

I agree that people don't 'die of old age' they die of heart failure and cancer, etc. However even with no diseases and cancer cured no one can live forever. All of our cells' have these things called telomeres attached to both ends of our DNA. There are there to protect the DNA since every time a cell divides and makes a copy of DNA little pieces from both ends of the DNA get ripped off. After about 30 divisions the telomeres are pretty much gone and the cell simply can't divide anymore without ripping its DNA and dying. At ~120 years this starts to happen to certain parts of the body like your skin, making your skin plastic like and unable to heal; it will happen to your entire body at ~130 years of age although no one has lived that long to see it's effects yet.

It is impossible to cure, you can't add to the telomeres without messing with cells DNA, and if you do that the body won't recognize it and the immune system will attack it.

Also, funny enough, you can simply stop the telomeres from shortening, making your cells able to reproduce as many times as they want to. This happens all the time actually. Its called cancer ;). Cancer cells taken from a 90 year old patient that died in the 1930s are still around and reproducing in various petri dishes in labs around the world. Cancer is immortal, humans can never be.

Wow, that was mighty interesting Trapical. I knew cancer made your cell growth 'explode' but I didn't think of cancer when you mentioned those DNA-ends. One question though; how is it possible that those telomeres 'die' at about 30 cell divisions? Because skin cells change every few days/weeks. Did you know that most of the air pollution inside our houses consists of dead skin cells btw? :)

because cells dont make new dna, when cells multiply, they just copy the dna, if something is different about the dna, it wont just be remade, brand new and unchanged, it will just be compied, and what has changed, will stay forever in future generations of the cells in your body.

oh and btw, heres a funny wid i found on google about mmos, kinda similar to the topic.

I was actually going to describe this in my post but figured it would be too much of a tangent. I myself asked this question to my Bio professor the day of this lecture as well so I know what you're thinking. Anyway, the ansewer:

Okay, picture you have 500 cells that can each divide 30 times.

They all divide, you now have 1000 cells that can each divide 29 times.

Then all divide, you now have 2000 cells that can each divide 28 times.

Then all divide, you now have 4000 cells that can each divide 27 times.

Then all divide, you now have 8000 cells that can each divide 26 times.

Then all divide, you now have 16,000 cells that can each divide 25 times.

See where I'm going with this? You were thinking each cell can divide 20 times and its dead, you're forgetting all its daughter cells can divide as well.

Oh and you can see an example of this by cutting yourself (hypothetically, don't really do it!). If its a thin cut it should heal as all the cells around it just divide, but if you make a cut in the same spot later on it will take longer to heal. Do it again, and once more. After 4 or 5 cuts in the same spot you will start to take longer to heal and it will leave a serious scar. However this doesn't happen to parts of the body that are designed to take a beating, like the tips of your fingers, which are made mostly of collegen protiens and countless tiny sandwiched cells. On the side of your arm or leg though, the scarring will happen very quickly

Aww, I'm honored, yet saddened that its too long :P

Oh, of course. Obviously, when a cell divides, there's 2 of them :? . The answer is pretty obvious actually, haha :D.

Thanks for the answer Trapical!

God oF End Failed to light a fire at 99 firemaking...

where'd you get that from?

splintercellsheepzf9.jpg

Actually your DNA, replicates itself not renewing itself so it gets older and we just start replicated crappy old DNA, thats were the term dying of old age comes from. But my teacher told me that once you reach a certain age like really old like 120+ you DNA starts renewing or we start getting better or somthing like that.

cyco_1.jpg

so what your saying with the all things together stuff is my elven warrior will walk out of WoW into the sims to look after a caring family of humans before going over to a WW2 FPS to enjoy shooting nazis with his bow and arrows (or more worryingly someone with a machine gun from a that WW2 FPS will be wandering around in WoW and massacaring everyone or thing in thier path)?
