No.

Kapersky is much better, as well as cheaper (I think).

Avira is a good free alternative.

I have no personal experiance but from feedback on these forums I have heard it is pretty bad.

I personally use Avira and Spybot: Search and Destroy. You can get both for free.

No, this forum and the people are great, but people here generally dislike McAfee because it hogs memory and is ineffective.

theres no point of returning it if you already installed... just use it until the subscription is over.

I tried it before, it does cause OS to load slower, just like norton...

I use AVG and spybot search&destory, altho AVG is kinda going down hill these days...

Quit runescape on Jan 6th of 2008, at level of 115 with around 150M worth of item in bank...however stats still remains

It'll do what you want it to do. Ineffective meaning that it used a lot of memory and doesn't have a good of a return as something like Avira Free. Avira Free is just that, free. It also uses far less resources and has a greater detection rate versus McAfee.

Actually, Norton has been worse than McAfee for quite a few years, but now it's McAfee that's at the bottom of the line, since Norton has made efforts to use less resources, but Norton is still ineffective almost as much as McAfee.

I would get either Kaspersky or Avira free instead.

No need to uninstall it and get Avira instead. I just checked the on-demand scanning results and other results for McAfee and it scored overall very good (at http://www.av-comparatives.org), scored an "Advanced+ (3 stars)" (test in february 2009).

Use it until it expires, would be stupid (in my opinion) to uninstall it. Ok sure, it may take a bit of resources (but you seem to have a good computer, so that wouldn't really matter) but you also get full support for the product.. etc (i don't think you get that with Avira/Avast/AVG - i'm guessing you'll have to use their forum to try and work out problems with the free versions).

And the the Norton haters, i'm sorry to break your hearts but it (2009 version) has been trimmed to be much faster than previous versions as well as less false-alarms and higher detection rates (Advanced+, 3 stars, same test).

I'm starting to think that Av-comparatives gets paid by Norton and McAfee for that, since I have experienced them, and yes, McAfee 2009, and have had pretty bad experiences with McAfee (I didn't try the latest norton though, but it seems it's still ineffective from what I've seen on some computers).

My personal favorites for protection:

Avast (Antivirus)

Ad-Aware (Anti-Spyware)

Windows Defender (Antispyware)

Comodo Pro (Firewall)

Nope. They are independant.

Here you have some more results: http://www.virusbtn.com/news/2008/09_02 (september 08, but 2009 versions)

I've tried Norton 2008 version on my moms computers last year (before switching to Panda as the lisence went out. 1.6ghz celeron, 1gb ram, vista basic, ati 200 series integrated, at the time) and i honestly had no problem with Norton, and that wasn't even the 09 version.

I am not hugging Norton or McAfee, but they both are becomming better, especially Norton.

(it's damn hard to find any recent tests that you can trust)

The problem I find with things like Norton and McAffee is that they have uncessary bloat which you don't need, which is why they hog up so much memory. I used to use Norton Internet Security, but it gave me problems when I tried to play certain games as my PC only had 1GB of RAM back then, and my PC was often sluggish at times. I've since upgraded my RAM to 3GB and switched to AVIRA and Ad-Aware and I've noticed a big performance increase ::'

Anyway, since you've got a top spec PC and you've just bought a subscription, it's probably best if you stick to McAffee until it runs out. You can always turn off some of the unwanted features if you want to.
