I was going to upgrade my mother's computer will my old RAM chips but discovered she only had 184 pin slots. So i went to amazon looking for RAM and the prices amazed me. I mean like $40-50 for a 1gb stick. I paid $80 for my 4gb (2x2gb) sticks of ddr2. Why is DDR so much more costly?

Many people have systems that require DDR and most memory manufacturers are A. making smaller quantities, B. holding them in response to demand, and/or C. moving onto future memory standards. I believe that it's a combination of all of them.

Supply and demand.

Hardly anyone uses DDR anymore, since DDR2 or even DDR3 is used in new systems. Therefore it's not viable to make large quantities of them, thus increasing the price for the leftover bit that is still around on the market.

Yeah, I had this problem on my old motherboard, it's almost so expensive you might want to consider buying a new motherboard first if you're thinking of upgrading it over time, it'll be cheaper in the long run.
