I've also kind of just realized a flaw in my life plan. I wasn't planning on getting married/having kids until I got out of the navy, which would be at like 38-40. But by the time my kids grew up I'd be all old and stoof.

 

So is it worse to maybe not see your kids grow to adults or to miss their childhood and/or possibly never see them?

That's a tough one, it may be harder to find someone who wants to start a family when you're 38-40, unless you're willing to go a bunch younger.

Up until now I'd just reasoned that I wouldn't want to make my kids grow up without a father around. Also it wouldn't be terribly fair to a spouse. But now age kinda throws a spin on it.

Are you planning on doing something that would really make it so you'd rarely be around? If you're on a base you'd think you'd be around a lot, but I don't know much about navy.

SEALs. If memory serves tours are 6 months to a year. Not to mention at times I might not even be able to tell them where I'm going.

Oh true. Intense. Well, if that's what you want to do, is the family thing something you can handle risking?
