So as much as I love the Navy, I'm a little peeved at the moment. My class had 0 overseas orders. I was not aware of this, so I worked my ass off to get to, and stay at the top of my class. So a few people in my class failed some tests and whatnot, and got pushed back to the next class. The class behind mine had practically all overseas orders. Greece, Bahrain, Spain, the USS Enterprise, all places I would have loved to go. So the people in my class who failed, got to go where I wanted to because they failed, but I can't because I worked hard.

What kind of tests?

I believe those particular failures failed the test about pepper spray, and some other basic stuff.

So you don't actually do any written academic tests in the Navy?

They were written. And to rank up there are written tests. They're pretty easy so far if you study. I haven't gotten below a 92 yet.

What kind of stuff do you need to learn for the tests? I always kind of assumed it's like "Explain how to take apart, put together, and shoot [gun]." Do you have to do any actual math? Like "Pvt. [bleep] shoots pepper spray at 20 degrees from ground level at 20m/s blah blah blah"?

I don't have anything like that, but depending on your job you might. For instance today we learned how we're supposed to treat detainees and such. Previously we've learned about the weapons and stuff. So for my tests I have to know what form to fill out to give to the CO if I want to search someplace. Also they drill Deadly Force into us (ie When we can use it, the definition of it) because if you ever have to use Deadly Force, even if totally justified, you will go to Court Martial and be investigated.

So if you pass a test you level up like in Call of Duty?

So you basically just memorize facts? There's not actually any application stuff?

If it's possible, could you give an example of a few questions from a test? I'm really curious to see what it'd be like.

No it's all stuff you'll actually use.

So for instance it might ask,

"What is required for the Use of Deadly Force?"

A. Suspect is aggressive

B. Capability, Opportunity, Intent

C. I deem it necessary.

D. He's trying to kill me.

(Note: This is a really bad example.)

So the correct answer is B.

OR it might ask "What is the Military Waiver of Rights Form?"

A. OPNAV 5580/3

B. OPNAV 5580/4

C. DOD Directive 5512/2

D. CJCSI 3132.01B

And the right answer is A. It's not really difficult stuff, but they teach you literally 4 subjects in the morning then you take the test after lunch. WE do actual physical training too, for instance this week and net we're doing tactics, so we'll learn to clear rooms and such.

That's what studying is, abc.

Me and Napalm have been in the maid game for years.

Intense shit.

The once was a mexican called pepsi,

Or maybe it's just he had Hep C,

He was a pretty cool bro,

Bros generally are you know,

He hailed from the land of 'taters,

He was known to hate many-a-hater,

He likes a girl named Lacey,

His thoughts about her are kind of racy,

And also his dad likes to [rooster].

That's what studying is, abc.

He's learning that x does y. He's not learning how to learn that and why x does y.

so we'll learn to clean rooms and such.

I admit you made me double check. But cleaning is pretty basic, so we "learned" to do that in boot camp. It's a bit of a pain to get polish(as in for shoes, not a nationality) off of the deck.

@abc There's not a shit ton to learn about why, it's either really obvious, or because the Navy says so. For instance, "Don't touch an IED." Why? BECAUSE ITS A [bleep]ING IED. Don't mess with detainees. Why? You're not supposed to, and it just makes everything more difficult. Both pretty obvious.

We're talking about the American Military here.

I'm talking about shit like "How does an IED work?" so you know how to disarm it if you came across one. Yeah, they could just give you a flow chart on what to do, but anybody could do that. I'm talking about stuff that actually requires you to think. I think the "because the Navy says so" kind of answers my question. You just do what you're told and leave the thinking to the higher ranks.

That's not an insult or anything. The physical shit you have to go through isn't something just anyone can do.

When people think, they tend to do something stupid. We have EOD to disarm that shit. They train you the best known way to do shit. For instance, back when the Navy issued revolvers, they would train you to line up your brass next to you while you were empty. However they stopped doing that after a guy reverted back to that in a real fire fight and got killed, now you dump that shit on the ground and slam more rounds in. We actually have a term for what you're talking about, we call it "nuking it" or over-thinking something when the answer is given to you. There's really no need to ask why I guess, I realize this just makes it sound kind of stupid (inb4youare) but in my opinion it's for the best. No sense complicating shit when people's lives are on the line.

Allow me to clarify, if I may, because that does sound contradictory.

You and your partner respond to a bar fight. He rushes right in and gets knocked out. Now there's two angry, probably drunk guys and a 9mm pistol with 45 rounds on the floor near them. Your first reaction is to draw your weapon and if necessary use Deadly Force, but instead you think "Do I have Capability, Opportunity and Intent?" SO one of the guys gets the gun, shoots you, your partner, the guy he was fighting, and whoever else. That's what I mean by thinking makes you do stupid shit.
