Due 10/20/2011 Emily Ripley

T-R 2:00

Exam I

Question 1: What are the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of:

(a) A coal power plant

(b) A nuclear power plant

©A hydroelectric power plant

Power Type Good Bad Ugly

Coal Low cost Smokestacks pollute the air with greenhouse gases Ash is hard to dispose of efficiently

Nuclear Doesnt pollute the environment; cheap Uranium at the moment The public is aware that if some of the leftover materials arent controlled properly, something could go wrong Spent fuel assemblies have nowhere to go (United States); possibility of nuclear meltdowns

Hydroelectric Renewable and clean source of energy rivers keep flowing and dams hold rainwater in case of droughts Just as many greenhouse gases can be created due to plant decay downstream Entire ecosystems are flooded to create the dams, and can cause very dangerous flooding in the case of a break

Question 2: Present a map of Nuclear Power Plants in France.

Question 3: Present maps of the Nuclear Power Plants in North America.

Question 4: Hydroelectric Information

(a) What is the projected power capability of the Three Gorges Hydroelectric Plant in MW?

Answer: 18,200 MW (maximum output) (from http://www.ctgpc.com/)

(b) How does this compare to the power capability of the largest Hydroelectric Power Plant in the United States?

Answer: The largest plant in the US has a maximum output of 6,480 MW.

(from http://www.power-technology.com/projects/coulee/)

© Where is this plant located and what is its name?

Answer: Grand Coulee Dam is located near Grand Coulee, Washington.

(d) Present a map:

Question 5: In the context of a nuclear power plant, what is meant by spent fuel?

Answer: Spent fuel assemblies are used/dead reactor cores to nuclear plants. Reactor cores last 12-18 months before becoming spent.

Question 6: What is the current energy policy on the disposal of nuclear spent fuel in the following places?

(a) The US: In the United States, spent fuel assemblies are to be stored on-site at nuclear plants. They are stored in water, lead barrels, or buried.

(b) France: In France, spent fuel assemblies are reprocessed. The good parts are sold to Areva (question 7) and the bad parts are buried.

Question 7: Identify the following:

Areva: The clean-energy company that does most of the reprocessing of spent fuel assemblies.

Anne Lauvergeon: Atomic Anne had a doctorate in physics (French equivalent) at 21, Forbes #24 most powerful woman, and the woman who runs Areva.

(from http://www.forbes.com/profile/anne-lauvergeon/)

China Syndrome: the idea that if a nuclear plant melts down (due to a pump breaking and heat building up), it will melt all the way to China.

Ionization: the process of shooting the neutron into the fuel assembly to get energy.

Radioactive material:

The hentai I've seen are 75% plot line, and 25% sex.

I find it amusing

The once was a mexican called pepsi,

Or maybe it's just he had Hep C,

He was a pretty cool bro,

Bros generally are you know,

He hailed from the land of 'taters,

He was known to hate many-a-hater,

He likes a girl named Lacey,

His thoughts about her are kind of racy,

And also his dad likes to [rooster].
