ram

Hey so I'm thinking of putting more ram into my dell inspiron, which will bring me up from 6 to 8. Will this give a noticeable boost to my preformance? And I'm not talking when I play runescape, I'm saying will it reduce lag in games like supreme commander or world in conflict? Should I instead get a new hardrive, or some other piece of equipment? (I also have a nvidia geforce 9400 gt, just so you know)

6GB of RAM is plenty enough in today's standards, so I'm all for a new card too. The 9400GT is not that strong.

I'd go for a GTX 260 or GTX 280 for a new graphics card, prices have lowered quite a lot lately, and they are pretty good cards. Watch out for power supply though.

The 9400GT is a low end graphics card I would upgrade to a 4850 (4770, 4830 or 9600GT if its a poor power supply).

If your seriously talking about upgrading from 6gb to 8gb hell no. 6gb is more then enough for any game out now, hell even 4gb is enough for 99.9% of games.

If your putting more than 3 make sure you have a 64 bit OS installed to use it. A 32 bit OS will only use 3GB of physical memory. Also make sure your computer can even handle that much.

From what he posted, he currently has 6GB of RAM.

Hopefully you have a 64 bit OS. It doesn't really matter anyways, I doubt you're going to see any real sort of performance boost after 4GB for gaming alone. It doesn't matter anyways because you have a terrible video card that is bottlenecking your machine.

Supreme commander is VERY taxing to your CPU, and memory. Especially in single player mode. (my 4GB ram is 100% full in no time). Graphics card, not really needed if you turn the graphics options down a few notches. I havent played world in conflict, but its an RTS aswell. Those generally benefit more from a strong CPU than a graphics card.

So unlike most people here have said, theres a good chance you WILL benefit from the extra ram.

That being said, a 9400 GT does suck, so you would probably benefit from that aswell.

I would recommend a GTX260, or a radeon 4870.

What screen resolution do you play on? If its higher than 1680x1050 I recommend a graphics card with 1GB memory on it, otherwise 512MB will be enough.

What CPU and PSU do you have?
