July 14, 200916 yr Horray for the British deciding to have their Orange parade despite all of the tension! As a result, in my home county a bomb has gone off by the ring road where one of my best friend's house is, and riots and fires have broken out. Not knowing that Drumarg was I riot zone (I usually go through there to go to my other friend's house) I got caught up in the riot breifly and escaped with a broken nose and a punched stomach. For those of you not knowing why these riots are happening, please refer to here and there is a annual parade hosted by these guys. So, yeah. This being my first real taste of the Troubles, I'm f***ing terified.
July 14, 200916 yr Well first of all, make sure you have some way to defend yourself, and stay inside. I hope your friend is ok. Not much else I can say but good luck. Get back here so I can rub your butt.
July 14, 200916 yr This doesn't surprise me. It's fine to have a desire for independence, but to use terrorist tactics as a means to "achieve" the end lowers you below the status of a dog. SWAG Mayn U wanna be like me but U can't be me cuz U ain't got ma swagga on.
July 14, 200916 yr Is there a question to answer in this topic? Can't see much of discussion value, but if you choose to leave the house, take a nice bat or a club, some weapon to that stature and they probably won't mess with you (if they can see the bat).
July 14, 200916 yr If you survive then you have a badass story to tell everyone. Use that as your motivation.
July 14, 200916 yr I was reading about the riots today. I'm all for the peace in Northern Ireland, but allowing the Orange Men to march through nationalistic areas, especially the Ardoyne region is incredibly stupid, they should have learned that from the 2006 Dublin riots. Being from the Republic I will admit I do have a slightly biased view but this is my view, I give no sympathy to the Orange men, if you're going to deliberately march through nationalistic areas then you're going to get trouble, and evidently enough....quite a lot of it. If Sinn Fein marched through Unionist areas of Belfast or other regions of Northern Ireland, there would be hell to pay. Zierro, riots like this happen quite often in Northern Ireland, usually once every year or so, this isn't an amazing outbreak in the recently "peaceful" Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is never going to peaceful if idiots like this are allowed march through their "opponents" area. It would be the Crips having a "peaceful" march through the middle of a Bloods area to give Americans a comparison if they weren't aware of the whole situation. The fact that 10 years were involved in the rioting is evident that there is still much hate, even in the youngest of generations.

July 14, 200916 yr Yet another issue stemming from religion. Not to mention stupid political bickering. What part of the current situation has ANYTHING to do with religion? I don't pretend to know the particulars of the problems in Ireland, but I'm starting to get tired of people blaming religion every chance they get. I'd recommend either staying close to home and getting some sort of personal defense item or start carrying something in case you get randomly jumped by a group. A pair of knives is good for attack speed and mobility, but something that can be carried openly like a bat might keep weaker and smarter opponents from going after you. It might attract people wanting a fight and/or police, though. July 14, 200916 yr It really annoys me with the troubles in N.Ireland. I'm definately not and expert, but from what i see, it's basically very small groups either wanting the country to be Protestant or catholic, and using violence to get their way. Correct me if i'm wrong, but in the modern age, and in sucha a developed country, this should not be allowed to happen. Want to be my friend? July 15, 200916 yr The religious reasons are such crap. It's not exactly religious to kill people. Tell that to all of the religion enforcing extremists, lol.
July 15, 200916 yr Author The religious reasons are such crap. It's not exactly religious to kill people. That's because there are none religion based. It's Irish people wanting their independance. It's the killers and bombers and IRA who are holding us back from a peaceful negociation and a peaceful Ireland.
July 15, 200916 yr But why would you even want to be independent from UK? It's not the unfair empire it was 300 years ago, modern day UK is a hell of alot better than most other countries. Get back here so I can rub your butt.

Becase most Irish folk like the idea of independence. It gives the idea that we're free. It gives the idea that we are a nation of our own free will. Plus, is a good currency. Pound is falling quicker than a plane with no engine. Also, I always get the idea that the Brtish government is very paranoid of its people. The ones it should trust the most. Well, that's why I want a free Ireland anyways.
July 15, 200916 yr I have to say it again. What in the flying [bleep] happened to "Thou shalt not kill." Get back here so I can rub your butt.

I don't know anything about it but I'm pretty sure the whole thing is Catholics vs. Protestants and they just use politics to make it seem like there are other reasons. Or it could be about politics, but they just use religion to make it seem like there are other reasons... I don't know much about the situation, so all I'll say is good luck, hope you (and anyone else near there) stay safe. July 15, 200916 yr I think all these things really make me quite annoyed. Why can't everyone just get along? Just wondering, does anyone in N.I want to stay with the UK? I just skimmed the wiki article,
July 15, 200916 yr I think all these things really make me quite annoyed. Why can't everyone just get along? Just wondering, does anyone in N.I want to stay with the UK? I just skimmed the wiki article, I'm fairly sure that some people in North Ireland love Great Britain and wish to stay with it. On the other hand, I also think that many of them are Irish nationalists and want independence. Britain's really not a bad country at all, you know. I just skimmed the wiki article, I'm fairly sure that some people in North Ireland love Great Britain and wish to stay with it. On the other hand, I also think that many of them are Irish nationalists and want independence. Britain's really not a bad country at all, you know. It has nothing to do with the status of Britain and how "good" it is. Simple fact is, 400 years ago that land was seized from the Irish and they placed Scottish and English settlers there. Since then, Catholics and native Irish have been treated as second class citizens well up to the 70's. During the highest of the troubles, Catholic men could be arrested and placed in prison without trial for an indefinite period of time if they were taught to be affiliated with the IRA. There is still many nationalistic and Republican people in Northern Ireland who hate the British "empire". Remember anyone over the age of say 50 will still remember the troubles well and how they were treated under the British rule. The British army, the RUC (The Northern Ireland police force of the time) and the Protestant citizens all treated the native Irish terribly. That is mostly the reason why they want independence.
