Nero Posted August 10, 2009 Share Posted August 10, 2009 Alright, sort of a follow-up to my previous thread, since Nadril pointed out that my computer is in all actuality a piece of [cabbage] (if you read that with sarcasm there actually isn't - glad you mentioned it Nadril), so I've been digging around and I'm planning on putting together a custom PC (I'll probably end up getting all the parts, looking at them for 30mins then deciding to get someone to build it anyways), so I'm going to post what parts I'm looking at and hopefully some of the resident hardware junkies here on the TIF T&C forums can tell me if they'll work together/are actually worthwhile. I'm looking at a budget of around $600, as I don't need a top of the line PC, since graphics have never really been that big of a deal for me - I still occasionally play DOS games lol. If not, sound cards are cheap as hell anyways. :P There. Have I missed anything? Heatsinks, fans, or any other doodads? And if anyone who's pretty well rounded with computer hardware wants to take a look at them and make sure they're compatible with each other it would be mucho appreciated. All the random computer specifications give me a huge headache (I actually read a giant article detailing the difference between DDR, DDR2 and DDR3 RAM. And I always thought DDR was a dancing game that Korean kids played in arcades...) In total everything comes out to just under $450 USD. Personally I'd go with a X2 and get a better graphics card, but I use my desktop for gaming and not much else. What's the real difference between the two? Newegg.ca has been around for a while now (atleast 3 months) the only thing is I think there shipped from a US depot and taken across the boarder so the shipping and tax adds up. The X then number in AMD naming terms refers to the number of cores. Since 99.9% of games barely make use of 2 cores its seen as an overkill to have more then 2 cores by most gamers, the only real reason is for general use. That mobo is perfectly fine its just a typo by newegg which made me chuckle. Yeah, I'm not looking to build a rig that can run Crysis on high settings, just one that can chug along nice on most games. I'll go see if I can find a cheaper AM2. edit: I'm looking through Newegg and whatnot, and the good rated AM2 motherboards are all just $10-15 cheaper than the AM3, and support only 4-8gb of RAM, whereas the AM3 is 16gb. Idk, I might just get the AM3, since it would be better if I plan on upgrading later on. Oh, and they don't have the RAM that OldJoe suggested on Newegg.ca :( That mobo is perfectly fine its just a typo by newegg which made me chuckle. I still recommend the Corsair 400w. It's seems to have fairly good reviews (4/5 I believe). And I keep forgetting about the corsair haha. Wouldn't it be better to get a PSU that's 150 more watts, though? Actually give me a sec, I'm going to add up the power consumption for all the parts, as 550w might just be overkill anyways. edit: Yea 400W is more than enough, so I'll go with the Corsair. :) Cooler comes with the cpu, pre-applied paste. And it's good to know that I'm not getting too annoying :P I just don't want to make some newb mistake and have my computer become unusable.
