Barihawk's Wishful Thinking Thread

Here is my opinion on how to overhaul the game...many of you should now leave or face dire urges to flame!

First and freaking foremost:

Warriors need sheathes, archers need quivers, and mages need bags or a way to sidle thier staves. This annoys me, sorry if it doesnt annoy you.

Next (prepare to angrily click the X button).

Abolish runes...mages need Mana points, that can only be recovered by potions or death. Elemental spells should be reset, and improved on by level.

And more death:

To balance this out, mages should have several schools to choose from (and NOT overlap). First would be white magic, would would allow healing and power over the undead. Call it a cleric, if you want. Next, black magic. Fire, water, earth, air, nonelemental attacks, blah. For those of you who hate me, red magic would be allowed to give weaker versions of both to a single mage.

New armours and types!

I want some new freaking armor for all classes. I am sick of the normal kind. Some guy posted nice fakes for new armours back when dragon legs almost came out. The warrior armor had a helm with freaking antlers...yes! And the ranger armour was brilliant.

Finally, the most diabolical idea yet!

Dual wielding of weapons and shields!

First: shields. Why shields? Simple, no attack, but you gain double the defence of both shields combined from the ability to block almost any attack. Useful when in the wilderness for non-combat reasons.

Next: weapons. Reduced defense, in fact...massive defense penalty. Your accuracy takes a hit as well, but your strength bonus is boosted. You hit less often, but quicker and with more power.

Also...spear animations. The stab should have you grab with both hands and plunge it into the enemy.

In fact, make spears useful...I havent seen a single spear in the wild yet...

Just some ideas for that totally revamped game they plan on coming out with later... :P .

Brownies if you read this whole thing.

Flame away, fanbois!

do you even realize how much money is made from runes? Taking them out is about the dumbest idea ive ever heard. Other than that some of your points are good.. I especially like the sheat/quiver

Note my last sentence about how these could easily be applied to the new game.

Other than that, I think runes are unnecessary. Of course, they would have to change the name of the game if they took them out, so blah.

Ive been told that somewhere from 650 million to 1 billion gp is passed around in the sales of runes, whether from shops or players. I dont care.

Wish for mana to apply with prayer instead then, because what you're describing sounds like it would apply more to prayer than the hugely already established magic. Prayer could just be expanded, prayer points fitting with mana points or just keeping the old label, and they'd put in cleric and whatnot.

Besides making spears more useful, I find everything else mentioned fine as is. Abolishing runes? It sounds like your idea comes from some other game. Well, there's no rule that you can only play RS :)

Hmm. Your ideas are thought provoking. I wish you could write without using cleaned-up expletives, though.

Anyway, my comments on your comments:

Sheathes: Sure, why not, but it doesn't serve any useful purpose other than it allows you to carry a weapon in a non-ready state and also not take a space in inventory. So, if you get attacked, it takes you a moment to draw your weapon, which puts you at a disadvantage.

Quiver: What do you call that spot where arrows are kept now? Air?

Storing staves: I suppose you could hitch a staff to your belt, but most of the time when you carry a staff, you use it as a walking stick. Again, you are at a disadvantage if you are attacked because you now have to un-hitch it.

Bags: What do you call your inventory already? Air?

Abolish runes, switch to mana: I ask the question why? The magic system in Runescape is based around runes, right? Sure, mana is a valid magic system in other games, but this isn't other games, right?

Schools/Disciplines for mages: By instituting something like this, you force a player to make an early choice as to how they want to build their character. While I have no problem with this idea, I'd say it is a bit late in the game to change gears as drastically as this. This would be equivelent to saying "my character is a miner" and is therefor restricted from fletching (and vice versa).

New armors: Jagex is already doing a reasonably good job introducing new equipment, weapons and armor with each update. Just because it isn't an "elite" item that you like isn't cause for criticism.

Dual weapons: Aside from torag's hammers, I agree that dual weapon wielding should be an option. I also think that martial arts style combat should be an option as well. Both styles have severe limitations and drawbacks. For an obvious example, you can't hide behind a sword to protect yourself from a dragon's breath. I think overall the drawbacks will generally outweigh the benefits for either of these options.

As for brownies, do you have sugar free? I'm diabetic, so...

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but, I am not sure you realize tht what you heard is not what I meant.

Sheathes: Why they serve no real purpose, it simple a funny belt item, you use when you are trying to intimidate people.

Quiver: Why not just lob stones at people, so much easier and take no effort to get.

Storing staves: Why do you need to, they are long sticks made from sacred trees. Each having diffrent powers. And, as afor mentioned, are walking sticks because mages require years of train and have weak backs(from arching over scrolls)

Bags: Good, stick stuff in them, like.... well you'll think of something

Abolish runes, switch to mana: Good but bad. Mana is useful as it means no extra storage, bad requires a wand/stave to channal the power and set a maxium amount of spells possible.

Schools/Disciplines for mages: Good except people want lots of choice, training one skill is like being a pure. You can hit high but not often or vise-versa. You can hit someone but can't stop them teleing out, or only using air runes.

New armors: NOOOO!!!!, armour needs to have a combining power, at the moment there are hundreds of sets, but... each is only as good as it is on its own. The more there are the more it winds people up

Dual weapons: Terrible unless you mean something like dual gloves. *Whack*

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

Hrm.... Sheaths and stuff aren't too bad, but the other stuff like MP and Classes would make RS more like other games, I don't agree with that.

More armor and stuff isn't really needed, except mabye a little more for mages and rangers, but not with a huge stat difference.

Dual weilding would be all right, but NOT with regular weapons. I think we should just have more weapons like Torag's hammers and stuff.

About the staff-sheathing, its only for staves like god staffs. The walking sticks are fine.

Mana: It is called a wishful thinking.

quiver: We have an inventory quiver, but not a visible one.

Bags: a visual bag, not inventory-giving bags.

cleaned-up expletives: Sorry, I was tired.

New armors: New looking armors, I dont care if they are bronze or weaker.

Schools of magic: Pures would fit into the black/white category. Those who want both can be a red mage.

Remember, most of these changes could be applied in the new game.

Far too much of your life is spent on Final Fantasy games. I'm sorry but it's the truth. :-(

Funny thing is, the only ones I have played are the first and second.

But yes, I have spent far too much time on FF games in the past year (liek maybe 4 hours a month!)

In all honesty, I was just impressed by it.

And I want sheathes really really badly.

Actually yes we do, though it is very hard to see. If your wearing range armor you can see it on your legs. Every time you shoot you reach down to get an arrow out of the quiver, and if you look closely it's there.

A lot of this sounds just like Morrowind (which is infinitely better than RS...but is sadly a single player RPG...so you can't play it for extended periods of time like RS).

I like the ideas, I think they'd make for a better game...it'd just be hard to do it without people complaining nonstop. You could make runecrafting like...mana pot making. Make it exactly the same except you take a bunch of w/f bowls to the alter and it makes stackable mana restore pots. But that'd be essentially the same as it is now...just sound cooler. I think it'd be the only way to avoid serious whining though.

The schools of magic might work if you left open the option for players to stay in a general category...but if they commit to a certain school they'll be stronger in that skill set.

The other ideas are just aesthetical value things that I think could get changed without little whining at all.

I doubt it'll ever happen, but I'm in favor of it.

The general school of magic would be Red magic.

Most of my ideas are ripped from Final Fantasy II.

  • 5 months later...

I'm all for spears getting some beefing up. The dragon spear is good, its similar to guthan spear in the stats aren't bad. Tho the only time i ever use it is in the new temple trek mini game just to get the juvie vampires off the npc. The special is good for pushing them back. It doesn't work all the time but it is definitely helpful when you can get it to work right.
