me myself , has been playing rs for quite a bit of time, and until now i realized how corrupt the rs world is. buying rares is now near to impossible, not many f2p'ers has been able to buy once, buyable rare items such as h'weens or santas. now the prices r outrageous, i mean come near 20m for an easter egg just a couple months ago it was like 3m now h'ween right when i was saving for one, then price raised like a million percent. Prices r goin 2 fast for rares. :-X

Considering the availability of rares, I'd say that they're no where near overpriced.

I agree, although I don't think they should be used in the way they are now. They were brought in for fun, but have been exploited by players looking to make a quick buck which they can wave around and go "Hey look what i got that you don't."

But if you invest in something at the right time then i guess you are lucky when you can trade it in for quite a few million more GP than you spent in the first place is it really a bad thing? Everyone buys/harvests/makes something to sell for profit it is how things go.

I honestly do not care about rares.

They're useless. That's why I don't buy one.

You can buy a rare for 50mil and then next year sell for 100mil, meaning easy profit for no effort.

Sonic3190 is still right though. They have no use whatsoever, they are merely an object that players have used to make a decent profit. I can guarantee if they weren't as rare as they are players would not be interested at all.

How do you know that they will go up though? With the Runescape economy the way it is, anything could happen, I swear Phat prices went down quite a bit didn't they? I still dont understand how an Easter Egg or a Pumpkin can be so costly, it's not like you can wield it and show it off like a phat or a mask? Knowing my luck, if I had one id probebly accidently eat it.

I disagree. Runescape seems to be one big fashion competition for a lot of players. Items like scarves, god armors, and most third age pieces are definitely for decorative purposes only, yet they're expensive and popular. I, personally, don't play the game like that, but I know that a lot of players do.

Although, I would love me some 3rd Age.

People just like having them for the sake of having them, especially themed ones such as halloween and christmas.

You are right, it is a big fashion show, all I'm saying is that I don't see a point in paying millions of gp for something then is purely for fashion.

I disagree with them being purely for fashion:

* In a long run, they are investments. Rising prices (despite some drops here and there) mean that they have a use: to collect wealth to the people who have had the chance and guts to put some money aside. That's far from being fashionable or anything such.

* They are status symbols. Same way as cars for example: you could buy a car for X amount of money, yet people buy for 4X certain cars: rationally thinking that's not wise, but it's a status symbol that shows you are wealthier than your neightbour and gives you a good feeling. This could be seen a bit as a fashion seeking, but I'd rather say that they add in value to the owner due his own desires.

That's why you buy a Santa, and quit.

Then when you are the sole owner of the last existing Santa hat you will become the one known as God.

That is the reason for rares.

Butyeah i totally agree on the topic of eggs/disks/halfwine/pumpkin Theyre just lame, you cant even see them ;_;

I'm sorry that I go straight for this every time, but proper grammar goes a long way, I don't care if it's your first rant or your hundredth, please take the time to make it readable.

Otherwise, I don't think buying rares is that exciting because they are useless except for the power to show off you spent two hundred million on a green crown that looks like the ones they hand out at Burger King with a kids meal. Seems kinda douchebaggy to me.

But with the same 50m you could buy supplies and buy some of the best combat equipment in the game. Using this it would easy to max some skills as well as make more then 50m in 12 months.

50m in a useless item is 50m you can't access nor use.

Rares have always been useless in my eyes.

I personally gained around 50m pure profit from my purple phat. Just bought it before joining the army, sold it some months after getting out and voilá: 50m more than before. Same goes with my current santas and others: I bought them earlier for few reasons. Firstly, I just wanted to have them. Secondly, I didn't exactly need that much money floading around at the time. Why would I for example need X amount of money now if I was concentrating on unbuyables? I'd rather invest my money and help my future skilling (or currently preparations for new skills) by turning my gp into something that will sell for X+N in future, N being a positive number.

*twitches at grammatical incoherence* Anyways....

If rares were cheap enough that all of those people who were smart enough to profit off of inflation of other stuff could buy one, then the prices woul only shoot up further due to the huge quantity of people buying them. So unless Jagex decides to make it a Communist market, you'll just have to invest in some other stuff and keep saving.

If you was to spend all but say 10m on rares and wait for the rise, you could be losing a bit amount.

For example the recent crash meant you could pick up items for 60% to 80% of there original value and sell them literally 4 days later for full price.

Now to do this you needed loose cash to buy the items and turn around a big profit.

Personally I brought a SGS on the pre end of summer crash for 58.7m, I've made about 3m from random lending and saved a silly amount in prayer pots and food (I'd guess about 1m). So I made/saved about 4m, cutting the price to a mere 54.7m, gained about 23m, allowed me to get into much better teams and given me a great weapon for solo hunting.

Do any of the of the rares available do the same?

With 20m and the right brains you can turn it into 22m within the same day. I did this with the DFS when it crashed, brought for lowest early morning and sold for max late night (after the GE updated).

That's just a temporary drop. Small drops don't really matter in a long run and if you have the habit of panicing while someone crashes, I wouldn't suggest investing. The point is to look at the long term growth, not few days.

Do any of the of the rares available do the same?

The thing is that pretending the price curve for discontinued items and items coming to the game is different. I'd personally say that investing (if it was intended to be a long term investment) in dicontinued items is safer and for the smaller risk you pay the price of having lesser growth than with the "lucky" items.

Of course crashed items are worth more than a kettle full of gold. However if you're not interested or not able to pay attention to the price curves (like in my phat investment), that's not your choice.
