Ubuntu 9.10

The Runar

Recommended Posts

So, Ubuntu 9.10 has been officially released. New features include:

"Ubuntu One", which gives you 2 GB of free online storage.

This can be very useful. Though I don't need it as I already have a Dropbox account.

Empathy messenger instead of Pidgin.

I don't know how good it is, so can't say anything about this.

ext4 filesystem as a default, instead of ext3'

It's quicker than ext3, supports larger volumes and such. Old installations still have ext3 if you upgrade them to 9.10.

I'm currently upgrading my Xubuntu installation, but it's not very quick...

Well, what about you other Ubuntu users? Already upgraded, upgrading now or later?

Yeah, I stopped downloading from the Finnish server (Because even it was lagging lol) and decided to torrent it instead. What I'd do if I were you is torrent the CD ISO, burn the CD, insert the CD and upgrade from the CD. (Insert the CD while Ubuntu is booted and you're logged in and a "Do you want to upgrade" kind of thing should come up)

My laptop's currently away getting repaired, but i'll be upgrading to 9.10 after it's back within the week.

Well, may be a new install depending on what they've done with the Hard-Drive! :P

It'll probably take me all day to back up my data on my tower. I can upgrade my laptop to Karmic anytime. I'll probably do so a bit later.

I was pleased and impressed with the Release Candidate, so I'm looking forward to a solid OS for the next six to twelve months. :)

...Alright, the Elf City update lured me back to RS over a year ago.

It took me SEVEN hours to install this. From 5 pm to midnight. Insane. Here are a few I noticed:

- For me, it actually boots MUCH slower. 9.04 booted in 1 min and 10 seconds, 9.10 requires about 2 mins.

- The RAM usage seems to be lower, which is a good thing.

- The CPU usage also seems to be lower.

- My laptop's volume control "wheel" also seems to work now. Great.

- For some reason, the Firefox icon in the bar at the top is invisible now.

- Many icons are changed. This can be either good or bad, for me it is bad.

Ubuntu 9.10 works swimmingly well with my laptop, which luckily has an NVIDIA card in it. Not much can be said about my tower though, since a- It's still got 3 hours to back up 125GB of data to my laptop (100MB line, heh) and b- When I ran it with the LiveCD, FGLRX was just an unhappy camper.

I made remarks about the new OS on my blog, and I think I'll follow it up a bit. But overall I am pleased.
