First ever Gimp drawing.

soulless

Recommended Posts

Okay, this is a dragon picture I am working on, and I am using a free version of Gimp to draw it with a mouse. I normally draw with pencil and charcoal, things like that, I even dabbled in pixel drawing with MS-Paint, but this is my first ever drawing in something like Gimp.

So what do you think of my progress and how can I improve on it?

I can not seem to get the scales right on the neck, any suggestions?

EDIT:

Okay I have finished it and am not proud of it at all... I had to rush it all because time was running out. I would have gone back and redone a lot of it, but things move along so slowly when you do not know what you are doing.

I mean I'm happy for it as my first GIMP drawing, but as an artist, I hate it and am very disappointed in its ugliness....... :shame:

EDIT: Never mind, I fix the JPEG problem lol.

I reckon the the whole neck is far too out of porpotion for the rest of the body. I know you need to use your imagination, but you also need a bit of realism too. It would look far more attractive if the neck was half, if not a quarter of the current size it is know.

My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.

I agree with Ouchy. The neck is too long, the bottom part of the legs are too skinny and the back left (dragon's left, our right) foot looks almost crippled. It could be a bit longer and less... squiggly, if you know what i mean. I think in general, the whole position looks a bit awkward and just too human-like (fully supporting itself on its back legs), but maybe it will look better once you fix the other things.

The neck is definitely the weak point right now. Other than that you're getting some really good progress on it, the color selection is nice as well. It'll be interesting to see how this one finishes up.

Keep up the good work.

I agree with the neck suggestions. Head defintely needs to be moved up quite a bit, and the neck needs to be re-done. Right now it looks like a curved rectangular prism... it needs to be a bit more rounded (can be fixed with shading, I'm not sure if you haven't added that yet or not).

By popular demand, this signature is back- however I currently do not have a blog up at the moment and if I did I wouldn't update it. Sorry, the sig links to nowhere :( .

I'm hearing what you guys are saying, and I was wondering if I'm drawing it on a widescreen, could it distort what I'm drawing?

No, unless you're set on the incorrect resolution. Everything is still in the same proportion, I don't see why it wouldn't be.

hey no-one can be perfect, so what he got the neck outta proportion lol, it still looks good

Nadril never said that he wanted it perfect. I'll let the quote speak for itself.

He's following the old unwritten rule of constructively criticize first, then point out the good parts in the end.

No one expects it to be perfect, but he asked for how he could improve it and we're trying to help him ;)

What?! NEVER put a sun in the corner!!! Never!!! When you look outside, is the sun always in the corner of your perspective? I'd hope not!!! Also, I don't see the dragon casting any shadows. I think the dragon looks great, but it's very out of place because the rest of it looks rushed when compared to the detail of the dragon.
