Can anyone suggest a good setup for these guys? I don't need to take pies in or anything, as I have 83 Slayer.

Just bring prayer gear with a zammy item (A cloak, prayer robe bottoms, book,or stole will do) and plenty of prayer pots - maybe 10-14 - and pray mage  .

If you have one, Zamorak Hawk is my favorite "Zamorak item" since you can wear the optimal gear.

Wear:

Helmet: Neitiznot

Cape: Soulwars > Ardougne 3 > Fire Cape

Amulet: Fury

Weapon: Abyssal Whip

Shield: Rune Defender

Body/Legs: Proselyte

Gloves: Barrows

Boots: Dragon

Ring: Berserker (i) / Berserker

Replace as necessary. Take 4 of each super attack and strength, a teleport out, bird food, a special weapon (DDS is good), a holy wrench, and prayer potions. Have 2-3 open spaces. I recommend only picking up natures, essence, boots, and clues.

The Robe Bottoms would do best, and use a fury and rune defender instead of stole or book. And Soul Wars Cape is hands down the best, with fire cape probably being slightly better than a stole if you have a Zamorak item in a different slot.

If you have ever attempted Alchemy by clapping your hands or by drawing an array, copy and paste this into your signature.

when I kill mages, I take

Slayer Helm

Saradomin Stole

Pros top

Pros legs

D boots

Fury

Soul Wars cape

Unholy book

Whip

Warrior ring

If it's your first time, take a rope. When I start out, I first go to the saradomin area (which needs a rope), and kill the mages there untill my prayer runs out, once I'm out of prayer, I head to the Zamorak area, this saves you from getting your prayer drained without any kills. In a normal task over about 200, I use 3-4 prayer pots.

Their defense is so low as to mitigate the need for a rune defender. I personally bring the Falador Shield 3 for its prayer restoring capabilities and sizable prayer bonus, but a prayer book will suffice.

Do remember to take a holy wrench with you as well.

Instead of using proselyte legs, you could substitute it for monk robe bottoms for and an equal amount of prayer bonus with a slight decrease in weight.

I tried using one before but kept accidently picking it up, and for tasks a combat familiar would be best as it speeds kills up a lot.

Combat familiars don't help when you're two hitting them anyway. I suppose if you're lower level you might want one.

What I do is start attacking one, and when it's about dead I just leave it for my familiar to kill. High-level familiars such as the Hydra DO help a considerable amount.

That being said, just make normal melee-praying slayer gear (except swap the slayer helm for neitiz since you're not on task) and change the PROSELYTE LEGS to a pair of ZAMORAK VESTMENTS (I believe it's listed in game as a "Zamorak Robe", it's the treasure trail reward, not the red one from Underground Pass).
