Is 00's Music it's own Decade yet?

Featured Replies

I think pop and rap defined this decade.

I think it really depends on what you expose yourself to, although I have to agree about pop, at least. I do, however, have a policy of mostly listening to whatever everyone else isn't listening to so I wouldn't really know.

So if its mainstream it's not worth it? My older brother has the same policy and it's so ridiculous. I'm not saying you're like my bro Dsavi (despite the fact that I'm comparing you, lol) but he has such an elitist superiority complex. "I don't listen to mainstream because if the majority of people like/agree on something then its stupid." technically science proves non conformity is stupid.

Anyways, lol. Dsavi the question I sincerely wanna know is, if you like a mainstream song will you try to *not* like it, or will you go along with it?

I have all the 99s, and have been playing since 2001. Comped 4/30/15

I think it will take a few more years before we start to reflect on the past decade, because of the overlap between decades. I also think that most genres still live on, perhaps not just in the mainstream, but if you look you can still find artists of certain styles emerging. Also, this decade has changed how we access music, through digital media and the internet. The internet has really help artist get "discovered", and find followers and audiences throughout the world.

I'm tempted to define 2001-2010 as the years of generic mass produced music, mostly thanks to the Idol shows and other spin off crap.

Especially if the only thing you want to use as reference are the top hits charts and what dominates the radio.

I'm just going with what was big and what wasn't. Rock fans in the 70s wouldn't say the 70s was a decade of disco, but, it's generalized as just that.

The 2000-2010 decade will be generalized with rap and pop, whether you like it or not. Good news for the majority of TIF, I think this following decade will be the decade of rock/metal.

Dio, Paul Gray, and The Rev have died this year. I disagree. Although I think we'll see more of the techno/post hardcore sound like Attack Attack! and Asking Alexandria. If you want to generalize that as "rock" be my guest.

Okay seriously Paul Gray and The Rev were members of the most mainstream and over-produced metal acts on the market. Ronnie James Dio isn't exactly contributing to the up and coming metal bands. I see no problems in the future for metal and rock.

I'm going to bet on blues music having a comeback

The next 10 or so years will be defined by YouTube stars and the karaoke singers off Idol and other shows.

There'll still be some great bands striving to make great rock music, I hope they keep at it. If the 00's produce bands as great as the Arctic Monkeys and Radiohead I'll be happy.

v and Arcade Fire as well.

I think the noughties will probably be remembered more for how music was distributed instead of any particular musical movement. The rise of easy online distribution (legal or illegal) allowing anyone to have a go, versus the mass marketed Idol type formats with their strategic Christmas number 1's. I think it feels like there's been an immense variety of music on offer in the last decade, and your perspective probably depends on what you're into.

For me I'll remember it for the emergence of bands like Arcade Fire, the Arctic Monkeys, The White Stripes, artists like Jay-Z and Kanye and the continued reign of Radiohead to name a few. The last few years has seen a nice folk/Americana style revival too with Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes.

No offence Assassin, like seriously no offence.

But White stripes, the artic monkeys and arcade fire are not ground breaking. (imo)

Did I say they were? Artists don't have to be ground-breaking to define a decade. You can define previous decades easily because of the invention of genres like pop, punk, prog etc. in those decades. Yeah there's been a lot of ground-breaking stuff this decade but I don't think that's what it'll be remembered for in the same way that the 60's was for pop and folk.

In some ways you could argue the Arctic Monkeys were fairly ground-breaking in the way they spread their music on their own without the traditional record label publicity stuff, and that's more what I meant, instead of their music. All the other bands I mentioned just happened to release some very good music this decade that influenced their peers and the sound of their contemporaries. And it was really just bands off the top of my head, there have been countless more.
