Listening to some 80's music today, I remembered that we are now out of the 00 decade, but unlike 70's, 80's, 90's etc, it has yet to be defined as it's own decade as far as I have seen.

 

Do you still class it as new or modern music opposed to it being it's own decade or do we still have to wait a few years for styles to change out of what we had a few years back?

 

Does anybody also have some music they would classify as 00's music just as much as they would classify other things as 90's music for example.

E4 etc is littered with passing references and shows dedicated to the music of the noughties.

I mean think bk to kinda 03/04 stuff from mid 90s was just music still. Its not really until the later half of the decade (like 06, 07) that we were distant enough to be wow thts really different thts 90s, this is now.

 

Atm though the noughties exists, its not been long enough by a long shot for trends to shift enough to make the music sound dated and thus has a collective and noticble difference to now.

Definitely! I dunno what music you follow but, the Alternative scene was pretty big in the 00s, like Strokes, Libertines, Vines then the Arctic Monkeys and Vampire Weekend and to finish it off we had Lady Gaga! :thumbsup: aha <3:

00's metal scene, has as a whole, moved backwards in time, to the 70/80's sound/style. Where's in the 90s, as a whole, it was kinda lost and confused. I will also say that 00's has been great for metal around the world, from being dead and buried to attracting more people to gigs than ever before. Yes, i know goth, industrial, black and death metal also had a good time in the 90s', but again... As a whole.

I think most will agree (maybe?) that the noughties was heavily rap/pop/club music-esque influenced.

Ok? I could say that i hate rap and pop too, but it doesn't really add anything to the discussion.

This isn't a direct answer to the question, but I should very much hope that history will look fondly upon The Strokes and The Libertines.

04-08 Post hardcore [and the scene/emo kids that came with it]

09-10 Pop/Dance w/ AutoTning [making for some interesting club hits, and fun artists like Lady Gaga and Ke$ha]

As a guy who likes the more melodic styles of metal, I think this was a positive change :lol:

As for the question... It's still too early to tell, I think. In a few years it will be, but as it is people are still playing the 2000s styles because they're still new.

I think pop and rap defined this decade. Metal and such came in the last couple of years, mainstream I mean. The 2010-2020 decade will be metal and such with pop and less rap I predict.

I think nu-metal was a bit earlier than that. You're looking more towards mid-to-late nineties and it kind of fell out of style in about 2001. Otherwise, yes (in the mainstream).

 

Overall the 00s have been a better decade for music than the two before it combined, in my opinion.

I'm not trolling, trolling implies a sardonic malicious nature, I have none in these posts. I simply hate Metal, any subgenres, and 90s music in general. I also hate 60's, 70's, and Jazz. Besides I honestly only like 3, maybe 4 albums from the 90's.

Yeah, 90s were great. And [bleep]ing Nickelback. Them and Justin Timberlake. It's all [cabbage]. A few good albums from bands formed in the late 80s did come out in early 00s, so that was :thumbup:

 

And no, I think it's too early to completely homogenize 2000 - 2010 into a particular type of music or sound. Maybe in another few years.

Ok so thinking it over, I do like some sub genres of metal, but the majority of metal/metal genres (not to mention the fans) I find over glorified and just bad. I'm just not a fan, plain and simple.

Seriously ?! How can you not like 60s and 70s? I'm not gonna flame but I highly recommend them since you get The Beatles and Velvet Underground.. And also 90s has Nirvana and Incubus! SICK. I feel the need to reply to the post again maybe.. i think the 00s will be remembered for the 'digital age' of music, after all you get all these people who just got popular off of Myspace or their own self-published work on the Internet, There are no stand out decade defining bands like most decades in my opinion, but certainly music as something we listen to changed totally, Spotify, Youtube, Myspace etc :)

I think it really depends on what you expose yourself to, although I have to agree about pop, at least. I do, however, have a policy of mostly listening to whatever everyone else isn't listening to so I wouldn't really know.

I agree. It's not so much the music, but how we listen to it. iPods, Myspace, Youtube. That's what really defines the 00's

Honestly, if this decade is going to be known for anything it will probably be the variety. There weren't really any new genres created aside from specific subgenres. Most of it was more of the same. Hopefully this next decade will bring something new.
