Car or a bus?

get a motorcycle, way cheaper than a car in every way, insurance, purchasing one, maintenance and the mpg's on motorcycles are really good, like 40-70 mpg

Yeah this is all true but you fail to consider other factors.

Helmet hair (for logner haired/styled males and women especially)

Need to get an entire biking outfit (leathers)

Storing/carrying around said biker gear all day; leathers helmet etc take up alot of space

Practicality of carrying stuff, be it books or friends or w/e

Higher accident rate

Higher fatality rate in accidents

etc.

Plus, most states only allow <250 cc bikes for the first year of your license. You could barely get one of those to highway speeds (which I assume he would be taking the highway? maybe not, but still).

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Any particular reason that you're not living on campus or in an apartment near the campus? Is it a community college?

Not only is it community college, but I prefer home living instead of sharing rooms with a roommate or

living in a dormitory for privacy reasons.

for the comment above, I do have to take the highway twice.....which is kind of a pain

since theres more chances of traffic.

I used to do a combination of the two. I live half an hour out of the city, so there's definitely no buses for me here. Not owning a car almost isn't an option if you live outside the city. But the university I go to gets cheap bus passes for the students (70$ or so for four months), so that's MUCH cheaper than paying for a parking space. And there's some super convenient DART (Direct Access Rapid Transit or something) routes that travel between most of the malls and the university, as well as a few other places. So I would drive to the city, park at the mall on the west side (for free all day!) and then take the bus from the mall to the university.

Now that I'm taking summer classes though the university doesn't offer the cheap bus passes, so I've been driving the whole way everyday. It's about an hour from home to the university. I definitely prefer driving on my own, buses aren't fun at all, and I always get motion sick. :P But it's way cheaper and more practical during the regular term.

You may have considered it already when you mentioned student passes, but check if you're school has some program with the local bus transportation. At my university, I think students get to ride the bus free if they have their id card.

actually, from reading all these posts, i've considered riding a car to school.

like I would rather take 5 buses to school everyday....

There are NO public buses that would ever give free rides to students...why would they do that anyways when

you got cripples, old people, disabled.....?
