dsavi
It works because it is a Non-Newtonian fluid. "In a Newtonian fluid, the relation between the shear stress and the strain rate is linear (and if one were to plot this relationship, it would pass through the origin), the constant of proportionality being the coefficient of viscosity. In a non-Newtonian fluid, the relation between the shear stress and the strain rate is nonlinear, and can even be time-dependent. Therefore a constant coefficient of viscosity cannot be defined." I.e. just because you hit it hard doesn't mean that your hand will go through, but hold it in your hand and it melts. (Of course this stuff is probably more stiff than that) Like cornstarch and water.

anonymous1234
Reminds me of the cornstarch and water experiment, like dsavi said, where they hit it with a hammer and it just ripples, meanwhile it's a liquid.

Kriegsmier
Meh. 300mps? LOL thats weak. Mine are 828 mps which equal 2,715 fps. And why are you using spherical shaped bullets? Those havn't been seen since the American Civil War. Eh, I bet mine would go through. ;) These are what I like to call Black Deaths or Nightmares because they inflict just that. And what most people just call Black Tips. Its old WWII-Koren War era .30-06 M2 Armor Piercing. A .30-06 cartridge filled with pure hell and a solid hardened steel core. This will punch holes in building grade as well as "bullet proof" steel 1-2" thick, like it was butter.[hide][/hide] Like I said, meh. Not impressed. I believe a 7.62 round would go through enough to do damage as well. The current body armor is not THAT heavy....just to many weak a__ b___ now. You fill in the blanks. Rainy_Day
I think I'll stick to my kevlar knife/bullet proof vest. I don't feel like walking around wearing custard any time soon. :shame: Good idea though, if it actually works with actual bullets that are likely to be used, then roll it out. Guy
Yay, another Torygraph reader <3 I remember there being a story of this last year or the year before around this time, so not really news for me. Must be that the MOD didn't actually implement it last time. Kriegsmier
The concept is good, however its not there yet. And the testing methods here are just ridiculous.
Furah
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it does appear that the reasoning for this is to make it lighter. They could opt to make it thicker until they weigh the same as the old armour, or just keep it lighter to reduce fatigue. Steam | PM me for BBM PIN Nine naked men is a technological achievement. ember3579
Yeah, the main thing I can think of to use this crap for is to flood two sheets of drywall or something with it for E-Z Bulletproof Buildings. Other than that, You're probably better off picking something more conventional. At least until they make it both compressible and make it a LOT more bullet resistant. How well does it hold up to heat damage? Almost all "explosives" nowadays use a shaped plasma jet to punch through [cabbage] by burning a hole clean through. Will this hold?
