IeatWindex
Ok here's the situation. From what I've read asthmatic activity is a 100% DQ from any branch of the military, but I also read people still get in. I have a massive goal of becoming an Army Ranger BUT I have asthma. I was diagnosed since birth but i've seem to have "grown out of it" for lack of a better term. I play football, I run track, and I'm always excercising and it doesn't bother me. I never use medication or my inhaler, and Ive once had an asthma attack when I was 6. Now my point is, with my medical history will I be allowed to attempt entry into the military with my record of asthma and just get DQ'ed if the asthma re-occurs or what? All help would be greatly appreciated.
re4p3r1
what a coincedence, i was just at MEPs. at the medical briefing, i was told the only reason you would get DQ for an illness is if it is hindering your physical activity (duh) and it's a chronic, like it's still going on with you right now. if you had asthma as a child but haven't had one in a long time, like over 5 years, then you should tell them. unless your recruiter directly tells you that you're not eligible, keep trying. also, a worker at the MEPs told me a story about someone who beat cancer twice and was allowed in Army, so if you really want to join, it's up to you
Giordano
Why do you want to join the army? "The cry of the poor is not always just, but if you never hear it you'll never know what justice is."
Iamdan
Unless they get access to your medical records for some reason in your country, you could just not tell them about it.
IeatWindex
Thaanks for the help! I want to join the army for the sole purpose of contributing to society and to push and test all my limits. And I doubt I can hide asthma from them and even if I could why would I? Being a Ranger is all about team work. Worst case scenario I'm on a mission with my team I can't hold them back if say my asthma became a problem and I couldn't advance. Not saying I will be a Ranger though, it's just the big picture.
Shiny
I'm sure you'd get in, as I can see it is very weak asthma.
mcneilp
Although it's not directly related to you, I remember when some folks from the British Army/Navy and the RAF came to our school to tell us about what they do and about the different careers and whatnot. IIRC, the only thing that was a definite no for an asthma sufferer was being a pilot or a member of a flight crew. It seemed they were pretty strict about this at the time, the guy said it didn't matter if you didn't need an inhaler or were bothered by it now, it was the fact that it was on your medical records at one point. Anyway, as long as it isn't bad and doesn't hold you back physically anymore, I can't see why they wouldn't take you. Tim
From experience, they dont care if you has asthma as long as you're able to perform the physical demands. If you can do that and it wont trigger an asthma attack they have no reason to say no. (Unlike me, I wasn't fully aware and still aren't if I had asthma but my lungs were like cascade iron after a Army Training Run. I don't know much about Army Rangers, but I know about Marines bootcamp, and that's always the killer - twice-a-day fun-runs. And dehydration, lack of sleep, and lack of knowledge on ironing shirts and shining shoes. That's a good one too! If you can already iron, shine, and press, you'll be the best-rested recruit there is! catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream
Kriegsmier
There are waivers for everything, literally...drugs included. I wouldn't think it would be a problem if you don't currently take meds for it or it hinders you. You don't have to shine anymore btw and ironing is very minimal. ;) Best thing to do is build up your core strength and stamina. Mental toughness is good too. IeatWindex
I lift every single day plus I'm constantly running because I play football then I do basketball then I run 400m sprint and distance in track and all so I'll keep to that. My dad says ge supports me but he warned that the training of an Army Ranger is one of the toughest in the world.
re4p3r1
joining the military could be much easier but they do it to weed out the people that are hiding things, just be honest with them. you wouldn't want a dishonorable discharge, that would ruin your life pretty much
