obfuscator
Back in April I bought a new computer, it's generally worked pretty well except for a few things. SPECS: RAM: 8 gbPROCESSOR: Amd phenom 2 quad core 3.0 ghzVIDEO CARD: xfx radeon 5770 1gb ddr5 Occasionally it will just freeze completely - control alt delete does nothing, the only way I can get out of it is by shutting down. I should be able to play tf2 max graphics, but for some time now it won't let me use anti-aliasing at all, which is weird. Resolution is 1920x1080. I think it's my video card, but it's a good card and the drivers are up to date so I'm not sure what to do at this stage. Thanks in advance for the help. obfuscator
Thread possibly solved: This computer has a 700w psu, and I was running it on the same socket as a monitor, laptop, fan, alarm clock, speakers, and lamp. Might have something to do with it? "It's not a rest for me, it's a rest for the weights." - Dom Mazzetti
Hegelstad
No, unless you have a really bad socket. And the computer doesnt always use 700W at all times, its just very rare at peaks. However it might be something with your videocard drivers. Ati is really crappy when it comes to driver, try to install the 10.4 driver, i heard that is the best. OldJoe
OT: Back as a mod? OnT: As the previous poster said, you could try different drivers. I'm running the latest from ATI and has so far no problems (4670). You don't get any sort of bluescreen, error-message (when shutting down or when you get back into windows?). Have you checked what temps your cpu+gpu reaches? 700w doesn't say much. If it's a random 700w china psu you can throw it out. Tho i wouldn't get a 700w psu for that build for starters, but anyways, no, if it's a proper psu it won't be playing tricks unless it's faulty. obfuscator
I get the safe mode message, but other than that no error. I'm about to test my memory and stuff. obfuscator
Ok, memory test 100% ok. Processor test fine as well (only ran it for 10 minutes though). Graphics card fine as well, although running at 85 degrees which I'm not sure about. Is there any way I can test my power supply directly? OldJoe
No not really, obviously if you had pro-testing equipment it would be wonderful. If you have access to another pc you could try it's psu (and other parts, as long as they fullfill the requirement). What psu is it, model+brand? 85c on load is not a problem. I've had the same problem as you describe in your post, but with bluescreen also, in my case it was the psu (not indicating that this is) - just saying. If you could try your parts (could start with harddrive) on another pc, to eliminate possibilities it would be great. Tedious work tho. How long has this problem been going on and did anything special happen (hardware/software) before this problem arose? obfuscator
Nothing special happened whatsoever, I didn't make any changes at all. The problem is significantly lessened since I switched sockets. The psu is here: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341019&Tpk=17-341-019 I also have a 300w one that I bought for my server which I suppose I could swap out.... EDIT: Looking at their feedback page it seems this PSU has a lot of problems...I wonder why I bought it :? OldJoe
That psu should be fine, it's a good brand. obfuscator
So I've heard, but that particular model has been faulty. I'm pretty sure this problem is either my gpu or psu...gpu performs fine in stress test though so I'm really not sure where to go from here. VARN
I have recently had a similar problem, where vista would freeze and would not accept any input causing me to force a shutdown. Replacing the power supply seems to have fixed it. I replaced the power supply because of the possible solutions this was the cheapest, I had to start somewhere. obfuscator
Yeah I'm leaning towards that. Anyway, we'll see where things go from here. "It's not a rest for me, it's a rest for the weights." - Dom Mazzetti
Jernlov
It's an okay PSU. I've had the 500w for a couple of years now and it only ever dropped power once, but it hasn't acted up since. If you're going to replace it, I would look into a Corsair or Seasonic PSU. I'm behind on what components are currently good, though I'm always seeing those two brands mentioned as quality units in several places. OldJoe
^Seasonic is contracted by Corsair to make their psu's. If you can try another psu in your computer, it would be great (i wouldn't use your server psu to try out). Maybe loan from a relative or a friend. obfuscator
It's not a server psu - my server isn't actually running anything so it's just an old desktop psu. Which, incidentaly, I had to replace, so I have an extra PSU lying around(545w, but it isn't very good). The problem is my computer only acts up rarely - so I'd have to use the other psu for an extended time period, which I could do I guess. Ruerin, how many fps do you get playing tf2? I'm generally around 30 at near max settings, but I think it should be higher... obfuscator
Ok, I tried the new PSU. It worked the same(still messed up) I'm pretty sure it's my gpu at this point, as i'm getting 25 fps in tf2, 15-20 in rs, and like 10 in furmark. Updated all the drivers afaik and still problems. And @Joe - getting bluescreen now after furmark runs for 10 seconds or so. You could try using trilinear filtering - gives me a little bit of a framerate boost. TF2 is known for weird performance drops - had a lot of problems running it until I got a new monitor and it scales better now. 5770s aren't really that great - they still have driver issues and disappointing performance despite being out for almost a year. I would probably wait until the next Catalyst revision before doing anything drastic but yeah, I think you've got a lemon there. Oh and thanks Joe. Shows just how out of it I am, haha.
