Gaining weight

Is there some secret I'm missing? according to the chart on this website http://www.disabled-world.com/artman/publish/height_weight.shtml I'm 40 pounds underweight (I'm a 5'11 male weighing 125). I'm not sure if the chart on that website is giving correct information though. It seems no matter what I eat or when I eat it I never gain a pound, I've been 125 since my growth spurt my sophomore year in high school about 4 years ago. So I ask you, what can I do to gain weight? In a healthy manner of course.

to gain weight:

1) Be less active

2) Eat mor carbs and fats.

Basically it sounds as you are lucky in that you have a fast metabolism so essentially you can totally pig out and do nothing excercise wise and you'll stay pretty trim.

Been there, done that! I've gone through both inactive periods with lots of eating and active periods with lots of eating, no results. Perhaps I am doomed to be thin for life.

You should consult a doctor, for many people the body mass index doesn't apply. And trying to get fatter by not training, eating unhealthy food can give you serious damage to you health when you grave up. What is your height and weight?

I was the same when I was younger, too. Most tif'ers are in the same situation, so you're definitely not alone :P I only started gaining weight (proportional to my height) when I turned 18, which was also when I started working out and chuggin' protein shakes. I gained maybe 10 lbs that way. Now that i'm 20 I notice that I'm gaining more and more weight even though I'm training and taking equal amounts of protein as before. My brother only started filling out when he was 20 but he didn't work out like I did.

So you can try gaining weight by doing lifts and chugging protein shake after protein shake, but in the end it's a matter of time before you start gaining weight naturally.

If you can't gain weight, you are overestimating the amount you eat.

Sign up, go to calorie tracker -> My Daily Plate, then add everything you ate on a specific day. If it's less than 3000 calories you aren't eating enough. Drink lots of milk. Lots. And 5 tablespoons of olive oil = 600 calories

BMI is a terrible calculation for seeing if you are underweight/overweight. Don't listen to that.

Every 3500 calories is one pound. Now, that's a lot of food in one day so I obviously don't want you to raid your kitchen for food (this, keep in mind, is for WHOLE FOODS and NOT junk food).

To lose weight, you have to burn more calories than you are eating. Think of gaining weight as just the opposite. Also, lifting weights helps a lot.

Just to make it clear if it already isn't by what Powman said, it's 3500 excess calories, so eating 3500 calories one day won't gain you a pound if your body needs say 2000 calories a day to maintain it's current weight. Realistically, 1 - 2 pounds gained a week is pretty good

Wii fit also said i'm underweight! that sounds like a legit source.

I'll sign up to that site and see if I really am eating as much as I think I am.

Also, @NikolaiH, i'm 5'11 125 pounds and 18 years old (19 in a month) It may come with age, so maybe only a few more years of this! for now I will eat extra with a bit of exercise.

tyty everyone who replied.

No, I did not clarify. You would be correct.

I wouldn't worry about it. I'm just under the target weight according to that site as well. However, seeing as it doesn't state any other factors such as age, or body fat % I wouldn't say it's a set in stone way to evaluate your health. Keep in mind that if your body is primarily muscle, even though it's more dense, it will be difficult to an extent to gain weight. The calories consumed will be just enough to keep your body sustained (provided you're mainly muscle as I said, and in turn quite physically active).

He's not "just under." He is 40 pounds under.

And like others have said, before we can give advice you need to just see how many calories you actually eat every day. Do this for a few days and get back to us.

Multiple options:

1.)Take a serving of Russian Bear before dinner, once a day. Russian Bear is a weight gainer with 3000 calories a serving I believe. This should easily help you not only bulk up but also gain weight.

2.)Pack the carbs! this is key to bulking up and gaining weight. The problem with this is that if your not going to the gym, or involved in any sports than you will just gain the beer belly.

3.)Make your meals from 3 a day to 6 a day, spreading the meals out makes you snack less, which is key to gaining the proper weight.

these are steps I took to gain weight because I was 6'2 weighing only 145. Within like 3-5 months I gained 25 lbs, then within a year I now weigh 195, but with hardly any fat. Working out is the key though because you dont want this all in fat, you want some muscle to come in aswell.

consume these if you want to gain weight as well... this was my diet:

Morning: 2 eggs, no addities

Mid-Morning-Protein shake

Lunch-Chicken breast sandwich with lettuce tomatoes, on wheat bread

post lunch-protein bar

dinner-Chicken breast linguine (pasta)

post dinner-russian bear (only half of the designated serving though)

Hope this helps!

Nice necro

Dude...the bottom of this sub-forum goes back to two months ago. I hardly think anything was necro'ed being only a few weeks from the previous post.

If I responded to someone on the bottom of the first page, I'd still be responding to something that was written in September.

Go figure...a forum full of nerds hardly uses the sports and fitness section.
