iTrip

hi i live in a city with a population of like 72,000.. today i bought an itrip (wired version) thinking that it would be a nice thing to have with my new iphone. it also would serve a dual purpose as an in-car charger. Well i used smartscan and it worked about 80% on that channel but there was interference and buzzing (the channel it smartscanned me to was a perfect reception radio station). then i manually tried just about every frequency and there was nothing better. the only channel that was off air was one of the local college stations but the itrip wouldn't transmit over it..

yeah so basically what do i do? i kind of don't want to return it until i'm 100% sure there is no station and then i'd have to buy an in-car charger anyway.

I had the same problem with my iTrip. I'd find a semi-decent frequency to listen to (still with some static) and within a half hour or so of driving, I'd be picking up other stations.

I ended up ditching it for a cassette to MP3 converter like this: http://www.amazon.com/Philips-USA-PH-62050-Cassette-Adapter/dp/B0007R4LI8?tag=meesara-20

Of course, not many cars still have cassette players in them, and this is not a charger, but it does solve the problem of listening.

I've yet to find an iTrip powerful enough to be worth using.

Anything that transmits over the radio has sucked in my experience. I just bought a new radio/speaker system for my car that has and AUX import on it and I use that.

Yeah, thats pretty much what I did as well. I had a thing similar to the iTrip and it was pretty bad, lots of interference, then I got a new sound system for the car that has an Aux import on it which has been pretty good so far.

The nature of transmitting a radio signal over the air inherently limits the quality of the sound provided by a system like the iTrip. I have never had luck with those systems.

If I were you I'd return it.

Using those things in the city is a horrible choice, as you experienced, most all channels are already taken up so finding a "good" one becomes a chore in it self making the product useless in my opinion. The best opinions are getting a car stereo that has a building jack for you to plug your mp3 player into so you have a direct connect from you portable device to your cars stereo. That's what I have in truck and works very well compared to an itrip which I used to use several years back.

Thank you all for your posts. Today i sat in my car (which really isn't mine its my mom's car, but that's not relevant) and i tried EVERY SINGLE POSSIBLE STATION and i actually found two with no interference. I'll do another check tomorrow and if those two stations work i think I'll be keeping the iTrip. Now that i think of it my dad had something similar to the iTrip but (being the technology know-nothing that he is) never used it because he probably didn't know the first thing about how to use it. Kind of funny because he was a radio DJ for like 15 years or something, his generic iTrip ended up getting stolen from his car.
