On seemingly random sites that I view in firefox, the text gets messed up, as illustrated:

 

 

Refreshing doesn't do anything. This is only on Firefox, no similar problems in Chrome or IE. Help? :unsure:

Encoding problem probably... Click View > Character Encoding and try to switch it to something else

What would you suggest changing it to? It's just on Western now, all the other ones don't seem to change anything.

I see that from time to time as well. But I was able to load the site in your pic (it says "Listen to Pandora. Send to Last.fm. Ebony, meet Ivory."). I am using Firefox 3.6.11.

 

When you view the source code of the page, do you see readable text or that jibberish in your pic?

It shows the normal text in the source code.

I got that weird text too when I tried to install my Chinese handwriting tablet. I haven't found a solution yet.

I'm using Firefox 3.6.13

Hm. Here's another bizarre thing I found. Copying and pasting the strange text into another field (such as a search toolbar or the address bar) produces the regular not-messed-up text that normally would be there. :???:

Maybe it is caused by an Add-on? if you try disabling all the add-ons, is the text still like that? If it is not, then you can try enabling the add-ons one by one.

I went into safe mode and disabled all add-ons, the problem persists.

 

My character encoding is set to Western (ISO-8859-1). I'm pretty sure that's just the default.

I'm using Firefox 3.6.13

Okay, I don't seem to be having your problem... FireFox 2.0.0.6 (old, but good!) here... I think I've got support for other languages (which would probably negate the issue happening) installed on this system, but this Power User account I have won't let me check. :blink:

 

BTW, upon further investigation, the page itself is apparently being delivered in the encoding you have selected, as my browser is using the same both under manual and auto-detection settings. Worst case, you might have to reinstall the "Western (ISO-8859-1)" character encoding, if not the FireFox browser as well. But I really hope it doesn't come to that, as it could be a nightmare. :ohnoes:

Meh I won't bother with reinstalling the Western character encoding since it seems to be working fine on other browsers. I'm downloading the Firefox 4.0 beta now to see if there's any difference at all.

 

Edit: Well everything works just fine on the 4.0 beta, for now at least. I guess I'll just have to get used to 4.0.

That's happened to me a couple times, especially on my school's computers. Usually just restarting works. Alternatively, a reinstall would work as well.
