Gerbil
What happened to partyhat prices in February? They were once in the millions, now they're in the billions. Some have close to doubled. They appear to have been climbing slowly but steadily until late January-early February, then BOOM the prices went through the roof. Even the purple partyhat, historically the cheapest, is at 867 million (which is more than any of them were before). It's also probably the only one to depreciate in the last month. I also seem to remember that they were much cheaper a few years ago, 100-200 million for most of them, and that that was true for a while. So then, it seems like the rate of appreciation was much slower in the old days and had accelerated slowly until the recent explosion. Does anyone care to tell me why the prices shot up like they did and perhaps give me a detailed description of partyhat price history?
Jediace
Their street price (forums etc.) was already in the billions, just free trade finally allowed people to trade them for that much rather than have to junk trade.
Hugger_88
Party hats are discontinued. They were given to all player of Runescape Classic on Christmas, 2001. They were originally given crackers, and the crackers were then pulled on players, with one receiving a party hat and the other a random item (i.e. bucket, cowhide, etc...) Therefore, the number of players in 2001 is MUCH MUCH MUUUCCHH less than it is now. This makes party hats in scarce supply. With people quitting each day with them, they are getting more expensive daily. They are being depleted. Each day more and more disappear. So thats whats making them rise and whatnot. Prices started a while after christmas for around 20k a party hat, with Purple being the rarest, and blue being the most common. The duping glitch happened, which made purple party hats multiply more than anything, because they were rare. And blue party hats being common, they didnt get duped at all. This leads to the blue partyhat being 2b+ and purple partyhats only ~880m. I personally can remember buying my first party hat set in Mid-2002 for 150K. That would be similar to around 50m today, in my opinion. Hopefully I helped some! Robert_R
Before free trade was released in February partyhats were rarely sold on the grand exchange because their street price was much much higher than the grand exchange price would allow you to sell them for. Now that we have free trade people can sell partyhats for their true street price on the grand exchange. This is causing the prices in the grand exchange to rise so much. FooK-A-Ji
The price of p hats will forever continue as so > -1 in price drop, +3 in price rise. Rinse and repeat. Add whichever amount of zeros behind the numeral as you wish.
ldailey06
The real reason is they allowed the ge price of partyhats to change by 5% per update, so they are more quickly approaching their real value
Noobzy
I like to pretend party hats don't exist and anyone wearing one is actually in a dunce cap  U Jelly? Nope, I laugh at all overpriced useless items. Same. Yup. I invest al my money in skills, which gives me joy in the game. Items I can only wear for looks, well... you can say whatever you want, but people with rares fall in two categories:- show offs- merchers "He really calls himself Noobz?" Sy_Accursed
It'll be interesting to see what happens when the rare's market finally self destructs. As covered rares are getting rarer, some people buy them just to destroy them, some are lost to hackings some to bannings and a fair amount to quitting. All in all it means at some point rares are gonna cease to be, they are all gonna end up in a permanent home or be destroyed; just a matter of time. Rares are in the billions now. It's probably a good time to sell those. Tim
This makes party hats in scarce supply. I honestly wouldn't call them scarce. I see HEAPS of them lately, most worn by players who either drop traded to pures or scammed them on a pure. (since I doubt most pures had 1B+ before free trade and you all know it.
