Should work as the sockets match, worth it; its up to you really.

Only gaining 1.1ghz processing power, but it would quadruple you cache from 512kb to 2mb.

 

To me it seems rather expensive for the specs, but then I use AMD and the socket you have is kinda old-ish so processor options are scarcer.

as long as it works and i wont have to get a new psu for it i think ima get it. a lil more ghz power is better than none :)

What's the graphics card on your current system? I'd be willing to bet that that's where your bottleneck is, not the CPU. Personally, spending $100 on a socket that is so old seems like a bad idea.

I would advise against it. The socket 775 has no upgrade path at all, and you will notice minimal difference. If you upgrade anything, I would upgrade everything. It's all very old. Even if you upgrade now you'll find yourself wondering why your computer is so sluggish in 6 months. Both your CPU and GPU are slowing down stuff, probably around equally. The upgrade will do minimal help, your GPU will continue bottlenecking.

I'd agree with this.

Even at a total 100% upgrade (so mobo, cpu and gpu & possibly ram) you could probably spend as little as twice as much (so $200 area) for a greater spec increase and more future upgrade avenues.

Throw $250 - $400 at it and you can get a pretty mean system.

That kind upgrade on your system would be like 15-20x improvement compared to the cpu upgrade u wanna do tht will be a fractional improvement

Sure at exchange rate £400 = $600 roughly, but US pricing general runs on par with uk (eg £100 item in uk is usually $100 in us)

If your computer's socket and processor are so old, I'd suggest against doing an upgrade, and keeping the money, while putting some on the side, for a brand new build at a later time.

You'll be way better off picking up a cheap graphics card. Do you have a PCI-e 16x or an AGP slot?

I completely agree that you should save your money for buying a new system. Its a dead end socket, DDR2 is being phased out, and considering that you're running a pretty low-end GPU its not likely that the boost from CPU will help.

 

Its annoying and tempting, knowing you can upgrade, maybe you'll get a bit more incentive to build your own computer that can run significantly folds better than your current one. Trust us its not worth it. Also buying it doesn't have to be ridiculously expensive, especially if you build one yourself.

$400 is a bit tight if you need a copy of Windows, but can be done.

The Shell Shocker looks like a wicked deal. I paid about that for my PSU alone. :P Also my case was around $300 as well. I found that once I built one it wasn't quite what I wanted. So take into consideration if there is anything like a case upgrade you would want to do in the near future. I spent lots on my case and PSU hoping to enjoy them for a few years before any upgrades are needed. I got the Corsair AX1200 PSU and Corsair 800D case.

The Shell Shocker looks like a wicked deal. I paid about that for my PSU alone. :P Also my case was around $300 as well. I found that once I built one it wasn't quite what I wanted. So take into consideration if there is anything like a case upgrade you would want to do in the near future. Haha no, but who knows what the future will bring. I had a CX500 and turns out it wasn't big enough when I took it in to get looked at. Recommended 750 to run my system but said an 800 would be ideal. Me looking in the future to future proof it and have it last a few years I went with the 1200 watt PSU.

If I were him I would be reusing parts from his existing computer he planned on upgrading. Case, power supply, hard drive, and dvd drive can all probably be reused. Reusing those parts, and the rest of your build, and adding in a copy of Win 7 and you are coming in a little cheaper. Hard drive you might want to upgrade rather than reuse, but I wouldn't get that one listed regardless. Get a smaller and faster one, for cheaper http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136794 (ok, it is about half the capacity at the same price, but it will be much better if you are putting your os and games on this one drive). Next I would probably replace the power supply, the one in the list is good enough. Case and dvd drive though there's no reason to not reuse those.

Yeah 60 fps is about the limit for the human eye anything over that is kinda pointless FPS

CPU is a Phenom II X2, cheaper than the quad cores and can be unlocked to a quad core if you have the right motherboard, like the one I included. More details here and a simple google search will provide more information.

For FPS games, 2*refresh is generally considered ideal in terms of frame rate. It IS just an ideal though; I know people who play well with less.
