My iPod screwed up while updating to the new iOS and now is in recovery mode, yet every time I plug it in to restore, it gets a little way through restoring then stops and I get this error message: 'The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occured (14)". My iPod is the iPod touch without the camera, forgot what generation that is. I think 2.

I think it may be something to do with my USB's malfunctioning which i've wrote about here.

Was your iPod completely full? Because the new OS takes more space then the old on. Although I have no idea what you can do about it.

I don't think the second generation iPod Touch can run iOS 5. The first generation of iOS devices was incompatible with iOS 4, and likewise the second generation with iOS 5.

Assuming that this is an issue with your USB ports, I'd recommend trying to use a different computer to update your version of iOS. The problem with that is you may lose all your settings (and app data) if you haven't done a full backup recently. However, I don't think this is a problem with your iPod and I don't think there's a way to fix it on your current computer unless you get lucky and your USB works for long enough to let you upgrade.

If your iPod is stuck in Recovery Mode, this fix should restore your iPod to the factory settings, but a backup should have been created automatically when the OS was updated so you will have the option to restore from backup once the repair is made.

If iTunes is open, exit iTunes
Disconnect iPod from computer USB
Click Start menu on desktop
Go to Control Panel
Go to Programs
Go to Programs and Features
Select Apple Mobile Device Support and click repair
Connect iPod to computer USB (device should install automatically)
Open iTunes
When prompted, click restore iPod
OS should install now and restore factory settings

iPod will automatically restart when OS is successfully installed, and you will have the option to setup as new or restore from backup.  If you wish to keep your files and settings, click restore from backup and wait until your iPod is fully synced.  If there are any discrepancies in your contacts or whatever, you will have the option to choose the correct contact to sync now or sync later.  Once your iPod is fully synced, follow the prompts on the iPod and that's it!  Now the next step will be figuring out how to use your iPod with the fancy new OS!

I think after 4 years they were able to fix their problem.

As it is a very old thread it is very unlikely any further help could've been done. Thus hereby I lock this topic.
