Offroading!!

Hugger_88

Recommended Posts

Hello guys and gals of Tip.It, as you know, I am Hugger 88. As some of you know my name signifies my truck. A 1988 Chevy K1500 Scottsdale. Hugger is a shade of orange trademarked by Chevrolet, which is the color I want my truck to be. That being said;

This is the thread for Tip.Its offroading society!! I made this thread YEARS ago but from what the search function has showed up, it is long gone. This thread will be here to discuss everything off the pavement. For example, trail riding, mud bogging (mudding), ditch skipping and all that kind of stuff. It will also serve as a sort of.. Knowledge base. Feel free to ask anyone and everyone questions, because me personally I believe I know quite a bit about the trucks side of offroading.

Feel free to discuss any off road activities you've done whether it has been on dirt bikes, ATVs, trucks, heck even bicycles. Share pictures you have taken and ask some questions! I'd really like to see this thread take off like it did back in 2007.

(Disclaimer for merging with Cars thread: This thread is solely about vehicles that are used off the pavement. There is a WORLD of difference between a stock street car and some off road rigs that are made, and therefore I believe this thread is valid in the point that it includes smaller 1-person vehicles and everything that is OFF pavement. Thanks)

I go mountain biking every now and then. I like it a lot but there aren't great trails near my house and I lack transportation. Plus I need a new bike.

From the very few attempts I've taken at mountain biking, it has been a lot of fun and I would really like to do it some more. But I'm in the NC region where there's nothing but tobacco fields. Haha.

Mostly I limit myself to a bicycle. There are some good trails not to far from my parents house. Some of them are actually nice, with crusher dust (like the old train tracks), and others are paths that people cleared out years ago intended for 3 wheelers (yes, that long ago).

I also have a go-cart, that unfortunately hasn't seen use in a while. It's so-so on the off road. There used to be a dirt pit that was a lot of fun to drive around in, but then someone built a couple houses in it <_< It still gets some use on the ice when the lake freezes over though.

I am doing that pixel avatar of yours, up to outlines atm, but don't have time to refine it, too much other stuff going on atm. So don't lose hope yet!

ON topic of Offroading, I have tried riding pitbikes with my friend a few times, on special tracks though. Epic fun, specially for a newbie ;) . But it also tires arms within first 5 minutes if you haven't had special training before...

So I've noticed this thread's regulars all follow similar trends.

RPG is constantly dealing with psycho exes.

Muggi reminds us of the joys of polygamy.

Saq is totally oblivious to how much chicks dig him.

I strike out every other week.

Kalphite wages a war against the friend zone.

Randox pretty much stays rational.

Etc, etc

Seriously?! :D Awesome!

And to be honest, I've never heard of a pitbike. But from what I'm seeing it does look like a lot of fun!

Pitbike is a really small motorcycle, max wheel size is 14 inches, methinks. They are mostly made in China and because of their cheapness they are really popular around here. The national championships had over 60 competitors this year (from a population of 1,3 million people). It is also raising in popularity elsewhere in Europe and in the States aswell. You could do a google search on them, pics show what they are, I am quite sure you have seen one or at least heard about it with a different name or sth.

I want a truck real bad. I have a Subaru Legacy atm which may be 4wd, but is not good for offroading. I want either a Hilux or a Navara/Datsun.

I'm guessing you're from the Europe area? I don't have much personal experience with vehicles from europe, but I have driven a RHD Hilux, and it was A LOT of fun. I've heard a lot of great things said about them, so if you're asking me I'd go with the hilux! Trucks are so much fun. They really are. Not to mention the practicality behind them vs. cars.

I really want to go offroading sometime. Unfortunately, every time I've had an opportunity to I was too drunk to drive. I guess one of these days.

Yeah New Zealand, so similarish vehicles. Our trucks are a lot heavier, but easier on gas. Is your truck Petrol, or Diesel?

Oh wow I was faaarrrrr off. hahaha. And I believe petrol is basically what we call gas here, but yeah it is petrol/gas. My truck is a 5.7L 350 Smallblock V8.

Jesus that has some grunt. 4wd manual?

This is what I want:

202582754_full.jpg

Mines 4x4 automatic, but yeah it's a freaking monster. It's not fast in the long run, but I've taken off faster than a few friend's of mines mustangs, a few camaros and a newer charger. It's got a crazy amount of torque for how it looks haha.

And that truck looks like what we call a Nissan hardbody truck. I've never seen a 4-door one though.

Managed to get stuck with some friends today. Had my truck, a friend's 2001 4.3L S-10 Blazer on 9 inches of lift and 37" toyo M/Ts, a 2003 5.3L Silverado with 3" lift and 33" adventuros. Tried to conquer a pond that was about waist deep. Fail. I wasted a half a tank of gas idling waiting for them to pull me out so the engine wouldn't flood.

But after my heartrate calmed down it was alright! hahah. No pictures, we were worried about getting me out.

I attempted taking a mountain trail on my bicycle once. I say attempt because it was really a muddy path which was a short cut on my commute which I got stuck in.

Offroading sounds like fun but there's no where near me where I can take a bike or quad where it isn't illegal.

Majority of the offroading I do isn't particularly legal. Just gotta do it and get out hahah.

As good a place as any for this since you somehow brought the memory up...

If you are on a bike trail, moving at speed, and there is a tree on either side of it, and they look a little close together, perhaps they are at the end of a mild turn at the bottom of a 10 ft hill, you can't fit between them. I thought 'going over the handlebars' was a figure of speech until I met two such trees. In fairness to the trees, tjhere was enough space, but with the speed, and the turn, I guess I was 2 inches to far to the right (not a whole lot of wiggle room), and the effect was pretty much the same. The bike stopped. I didn't.

Since the trees were at the bottom of a tiny hill though, and the bike was still pointing down when it came to a most sudden stop, it was kind enough to lift me a bit so that I cleared the handlebars completely, and I was fortunate enough to get far enough ahead that the bike didn't land on me.

Then there was the time, when I was much younger, and I took my bike off a jump at not inconsiderable speed. After gaining at least my own height at the time in air, I promptly separated from the bike (it kind of bounced me off the seat and rather than be pulled into a head dive, I let go). Somehow I contrived to land first, directly under the bike, where by some good fortune it didn't touch me at all, just pinned me to the dirt. It was close though. I told it was quite spectacular.
