slayerspud
Well I have decided to build my own pc because all the sites i have been on have seemed to jack up the price. Also building one would be an experience. I have ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã400 To spend. I Dont Really need a good gfx card at the moment but i would like a powerful system. At the moment i already have a monitor and a CPU Case Power Supply Motherboard CPU 660 Intel Pentium̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî 4 LGA775 CPU (3.60 Ghz 800FSB) HT 2MB Cache with Intel̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâî EM64T *Retail* http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=176848 Thermal Compound or Thermal Pad Heatsink/Fan Memory Graphics Card Optical Drive Hard drive IDE Cables SATA Cables Case Fans Now all i need is help with all the other things. My ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã400 budget is low i know but i just need some suggetions. Thanks
Justinlevine
You could go to a computer show (if any are held in England, I don't know much about there) and they have some magnificent deals. Someone's building me a 2.6GHZ, 512MB RAM, 60GB HD, 256MB vid card, LED lighted case etc. with Windows XP Pro for $400. That's incredibly cheap (and completely new). If you hear of any upcoming computer shows in Britain, I would recommend checking them out and speaking with a vendor.

Militaris
I have never used thermal compounds, custom heatsinks, or required extra case fans. All of the cables I have ever required was supplied with the products when I purchased them, so I would not be able to offer any advice in these areas. (Well I could but It would require heaps of research which I do not feel like doing) Memory: Unless you are planning on overclocking, I would suggest buying value memory. Probably should purchase 2x 512mb, or 2x 1024MB. getting corsair 2x 512 pc3200+ memory should cost around ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã60. Graphics Card: As you likely know there are heaps of different video cards currently around. Many of them have good preformance, but many are also expensive. A few get the balance right and these are the following. GeForce 6600GT Radeon X800GTO GeForce 6800 GS GeForce 7800 GT For game preformance the video card is the most important part. For a gaming PC to roughly match your CPU I would suggest a 6800GS, but you do not want/require a good card so the 6600gt should be accurate. There are cheaper cards. This seems to be the cheapest option from Scan. http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=144694 Optical Drive: Benq and Lite-On make good optical drives. Dual Layer 16X DVD Writers seem to be the main choice at the moment. Hard drive: At this point of time 160GB, 200GB, 250GB and 300GB are quite good value for money. All of the main hard-drive brands are reasonable quality, and every brand seems to have their supporters. I generally suggest Seagate or Western Digital. Although I would not pay significantly more for them.
slayerspud
Thanks for te suggestions i proberbly going to get http://www.scan.co.uk/products/producti ... tID=291360 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/producti ... tID=210795 Now i just need to find a decent case/motherboard anyone got some suggestions? Albosky
I have never used thermal compounds, custom heatsinks, or required extra case fans. regardless of what heatsink and fan you use , ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS apply some form of thermal transfer material (paste or pad, preferably paste) between the heatsink and cpu's core!!! ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS!!!! Any surface variations could create air pockets which become VERY VERY hot. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS USE A THERMAL TRANSFER MATERIAL!! hopefully I got my point across. slayerspud
So USE A THERMAL TRANSFER MATERIAL lol kk. So that means i need to buy some thermal paste?
Albosky
maybe not , if you decide to buy a retailed box Intel cpu , the heatsink will already be attached to the cpu and has a pad pre-installed (at least they used to) , but yes , ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS heheh :P I like to fart silently but deadly in movie theatersArd Choille says (11:41 PM):I wouldn't dare tell you what to do m'dear
slayerspud
because it is 'retail' do i get anything extra with it instead of just the cpu like a heatsink/pad?

Militaris
because it is 'retail' do i get anything extra with it instead of just the cpu like a heatsink/pad? From my experience retail boxes contain everything which is required. It would include Thermal something. The CPU is likely to already have the Heatsink attached with a thermal compound apllied. You might also get a couple of CDs, manual ect. There is not much of a difference between the different 'types' of thermal compound. It is normally only a matter of a few degrees which is not significant for operation.
slayerspud
Ok thanks for your time so i am getting CPU http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=176848 Hdd http://www.scan.co.uk/products/producti ... tID=210795 Memory http://www.scan.co.uk/products/producti ... tID=291360 Monitor http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=308036 Gfx card http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=337365 Dvd Drives http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=112971 Now all i need is a case and motherboard :S Anyone Got and suggestions? wahoo
hmm, i seem to be having great trouble finding a motherboard that supports ddr500, i don't know why :S If you end up buying a motherboard that only supports up to ddr400, then the ram will downclock, so it's not the end of the world, but it is a waste of money to buy the ddr500 ram then. slayerspud
Thanks for trying to find one :P I Can't find one as well.
Militaris
DDR500 is not a officaly supported standard for memory, that is way it is difficult to find a board which supports it. But many motherboards can support it. Unless you plan on overclocking getting expensive ram like that is not really worthwhile. I suggest following. Its preformance would be simalar and they are cheaper. The only need for expensive ram is for overclocking. 2Gb (2x1Gb) Corsair Value Select PC3200 DDR ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã117.37 http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=217959 A DDR2 Alternative would be. http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=121626 GPU The Geforce 6800 is a good value for money video card, (I would personally try and get the Connect 3D ATI PCI-E X800GTO). Case The choice of case is largely up to personal preference, I find the CoolerMaster Centurion or the Cavalier cases to be good value for money. Motherboard I do not know much about the different intel boards, so can not suggest one.

devilheart14
this link will help u actually build the PC for reference or a complete walkthrough. http://www.buildyourown.org.uk/ Not to sure about the SATA 1 and SATA 2 ? I think they may be compatible but wont work aswell, thats if the jumper cables are the same? Try going for a sata 2 hard drive aswell so it wont be obsolte soon. Just check with other people first. wahoo
There are better looking cheap cases than that around. Remember, the cheaper the case is, the harder it will end up being to install stuff.

One last thing but will all of this be compatible with eachother because like the hard drive is Sata 1 and the motherboard is Sata 2 Thanks -=Slayerspud=- The hard drive will work with the motherboard. You might want to consider getting a Sata 2 hard drive, but it isnt necessary. I hope you dont have any trouble putting your computer together, and enjoy it when you do have it together. :) Trophy Fish Caught: 3/399 Woodcutting 10-30-0599 Firemaking 2-22-0699 Fletching 9-27-
Apocalypse20
oh dear, i guess if thats what you want, but you could get a lot more for less, you can get an x2 3800 for ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã200-230 and these overclock really well. i would also get an x800 better price:performace than geforce 6 series. If you want a gaming processor, get an AMD. If you ever upgrade.
