I ranged it also... how far back were you because I did not try long range. From my experience it seems to unequip you then tele you like an abby. I finally killed it, got 200 Rune Arrows then a Clan killed me. I only have 82 Range so I didn't bother with that since I have not pots, but I noticed that when your farther away, you get un-equiped more often.
