Is Runescape getting ahead of itself?

Featured Replies

:( Wow, im glad the people in OT are the ones there, and not you lot, this isnt a debate, but a random mess of posts.

Anyways, my view: I do not think realisim is what this game is about. If y ou wish to play a realistic game, go play GTA, or some kind of modern day FPS, those are more realistic. If you wish to play a game that is not from this time, i suggest you go play another game besides runescape. Runescape is a fantasy game, not a midevil game (ive never heard of the Midevil game genre.) The point of these kinds of games anyways, is to live a diffrent life, to not be yourself, your from your world.

Now i think Runescape does a very good job of this, as it allows us to group together in a diffrent world and creat a community based on whats in that world, not on what we wish to be in that world.

Camo... Back in thoes days, of England and the kings when they actually had armour "midevil times" I haven't seen one person with camo. I belive most of these items should be resigned and replaced with new.

. (This probably belongs in rants?)

firstly, i don't normaly critises this, but what happened to spelling? Do you mean medeval? And do you mean re-designed? It changes the meaning of what you are saying. Furthermore, what's with the obssesion with England - i hate to destroy the american camelot fantasy, but there were other countries (france and the federation of states now known as Germany) that were very similar in the broad un-academic scheme of things. Camoflauge was around at the time, just not in europe. In India and the far east, the idea of camoflauge, or the concept of blending into the background, was reasonably prevelant. The most often used example would be the ninja, who wore black to blend into the shadows. Camoflauge similar to that seen in the game was in use in india, with dirty, mudy colourations. FInanly, like everyone else has said, it's a game...it's not real, don't go the way of marteen if they don't turn camo into damasked battle armor.

OK, bit off topic to start off with, but FuBai if you're going to criticise spelling you really need to ensure your post is flawless, you even misspelled the word you were trying to correct (medieval for future reference)...

Anyway, back on topic if you want games based around reality HeatMaker there are a load of them out there, but really, you can't pick and choose what you deem to be reality "dragons are ok, but camouflage is far too unrealistic" :?: As others have said it's a fantasy game, enjoy it for what it is, or find something else to play.

firstly, the reason I prefaced this with "]

is because i am dyslexic and misspell things often - however resigned and re-designed are so drasticaly different i needed clarification. I do not critisise speeling usualy, as i said. Et en plus about half of your corrections are merely american basterdisations of the English. The point of my post was to demonstrate that firstly there is no need to stick ridgedly to reality, and also that camoflauge (btw, that is the correct spelling according to my dictionary) did infact exisit.

lol if u want realistic then stop playing and look outside

not being very realistic and having that stuff is what is making the game fun.

and for the people who say that we had no steam engines in midages, understand that dwarven technology is way ahead of humans, since they did not waste time on the god wars :)

May i say.

They did have cammo armour...

They wore bits of grass etc on them.

If anyone remembers me... PM ME. having nostaligia issues D:

I'm just throwing my two cents in here and I don't have time to read all 6 pages so excuse me if someone has already covered this.

Runescape is not a historical game, it is a fantasy theme. That means it is based on a period, but not 100% period specific. How much they deviate from the target period is at their own discretion. I've played a game before that tries to be hyper realistic and at times it can kill the fun of the game. I mean if I want reality, I can just walk out my front door. I play a game to do and see things I can't do irl. Just because a game is "based on" the dark ages but has cannons, doesn't mean it's an anachronism.

Here's a perfect example. On that game there was talk of having plated armor removed because the setting was in the dark ages and such armor was very uncommon at that time. I personally liked using armor and felt like it balanced my fighting style well, it was probably the only thing that kept my character alive through most fights. Now they wanted to remove something I liked, all because it didn't "fit the period" however they were basing their period on dark ages europe. The game world is all original, not based on the real world at all, has over a dozen sentient races that are non human including enormous subterranean spiders, big magic casting plants, goblins, humanoid people with gray skin, large noses, and large ears, a version of those people that can breath underwater, an underwater race that are like enormous squids, small furry flying creatures that can cast powerful magic. In addition there are crossbows, widely available coal, a smithable metal that doesn't exist in the real world, and more anachronisms. So why in the world would plate armor that doesn't match the time period matter? The dark ages were largely the DARK ages because of the effects of catholocism on europe where learning was stiffled. That wouldn't have any effect on the game world and many of the races in the game are quite a bit smarter than humans so wouldn't it make sense for more technology to be present in the game?

That is the sort of illogical nitpicking that actually steals fun from games. Why would a game be more fun if it's more realistic? That's only your preference and if you truly like that kind of game, I'm sure you can find something out there. Runescape shouldn't have to be reshaped just to suit the whims of a small group of people. Runescape is the way it is, because Jagex wants it that way. You can't expect them to change it to suit your wants any more than you can expect a game developer for game consoles to rewrite their game and package you a new copy because you didn't like how they made the game.
