HOW DOES ONE GET HACKED?

I once thought that only suckers deliberately giving away their passwords to strangers or macroing cheating scum were the only ones to get hacked. But now I know it's otherwise.

The first suspicion of hacking arose a few months ago, when I started playing Runescape after a looong "vacation" from the game and realized that my set of masks was missing. Having no memory of selling it, I found it a bit curious, but strangely enough, this was the ONLY thing that was missing so I thought "Oh what the hey, maybe I'm just getting senile" and went on playing.

Now, after being away from the internet for a month and a half, I recently logged in, just to find out that EVERYTHING of importance was missing! My full rune, my dbattle axe, dragon ammy, all my herbs, almost all my runes (except the blood runes, strangely enough), my last rare item (a santa's hat) and all my money, which wasn't all that much, but still..

Now, obviously there's nothing I can do except whining, but that doesn't give me my stuff back, I know that. But I wonder: HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? I've never given away my password or tried using a cheating device.. so could someone please explain to me just how the fudge this hacking process works? My password could hardly have been guessed either..

Also, where do I go from here? Obviously I would have to change my password, but is it something Jagex could do about it, like ban the fudgehead who hacked me? I know someone logged in on my account 33 days ago, but they can't just go blocking ip-numbers, can they?

Advice advice advice, please!!

no-one can be hacked, but if you had a keylogger, mouselogger, clicklogger, or any other annoying little virus or tool, then your password can be copied. and jagex WILL NOT replace any item. ever.

Back by popular demand!

And I guess I just wanted to tell you, as the light starts to fade, that you aree the reason, that I am not afraid, and I guess I just wanted to mention, as the heavens will fall, that we will be together soon if we will be anything at all.

It doesn't just log your password.

It records every single thing you type on the keyboard, so if you're shopping online sing a credit/debit card they could steal your money effectively. Although that's completely illegal and you can go to jail.

I disagree, its not that hard, you just have to be dumb enough to trust a stranger on messenger. But either way they really wont so I dont see the use in reporting this just scan your computer for spyware.

A keylogger can enter your system in lots of ways. One of the easiest is via Peer to Peer filesharing, you think your downloading a video say, but it comes with a surprise package which you wont even know about - until its too late.

As for removal/protection, Spyware Doctor contains an anti-keylogger tool. You can download it here:

Im assuming its OK to post this address in the forum - its a respectable site - sorry if its against the rules.

Why is 'common sense' so named, when there is so little of it about?

Do you use the same password on here as in game?

first, you will never get a virus if you never download anything off anything but hugely respectable sources, and dont accept anything from im unless you know the person irl

second, tip.it PROBABLY dont leave their users passwords lying around on a desk somewhere, and using more minor forums is more likely to lead to you losing your password

You wont get hacked, but if your so stupid and download some autominer or so, I can promis you you will get hacked.

Actually I dont know why its called hacking? Rahter "im stupid".

There nothing that can be done, its alone your problem.

And a keylogger records your keystrokes.

Happy mining.

Btw, I'm pretty sure but does f-secure client 6.01 contain a anti keylogger?

Getting a keylogger or trojan is easier than you think...I've caught ones trying to get into my comp and all i did was click a link from GOOGLE! I mean i always knew if you download files that that is dangerous, but a simple html link can do it now? That's weird and scary, thankfully i have an antivirus that will automatically catch that stuff before it installs.

All google does is index all the pages on the web, it doesn't check them for safety. Do a search for 'wallpaper' and I'll bet at least 50% of the results will be sites which contain malware. A useful tool you can use when searching with Google is 'SiteAdvisor'. Its a browser extension available for IE & Firefox. Siteadvisor puts an indicator beside each search result showing you if the site contains malware, popups, etc. Not every site will have been rated, but the majority have been.

Details of how it works and a link to download can be found here.
