The Elimination of Sonic Boom

Featured Replies

Hey,

I'm doing a research project for my Physics class, on the subject of waves in general. I've chosen to focus in on sound waves, even more specifically, sonic boom. I remember watching a program a while ago on the Discovery channel which showed countries such as America, Russia, and China (I think these were the only three) who possessed secret military jets, capable of flying at Mach speeds, yet producing little/no noise, yet a lone a sonic boom. My idea is to research how this was done, or the plans for eliminating the sonic boom.

Problem is, I have no idea what the show was called. Has anyone seen it? I know about Busemann's Biplane, which is a theory for the elimination of the sonic boom, where no shock waves are generated. However, I can't find much information on other theories, or even better, an actual, working example.

I'm sure they do exist in the military...powerful jets which fly at mach speeds without the sonic boom, but I've yet to find an example of one. I suppose if they do exist, countries wouldn't exactly be boasting about them at the moment, now would they.

Does anyone have further information on the issue? Other theories around on the elimination? I'd love to hear it, as it will both assist in my project work, and it is quite an interesting topic all around.

Thanks for your help, and interest. :P

Wow, scary. I'm doing waves in physics right now too :|.

If I were to make a very uneducated guess, I would say the plane was shooting waves in the same direction as the sound waves made by the boom. They would have to be going in the same direction and be completely out of phase with one another, but the out of phase waves going in the same direction result in a complete cancellation of the waves, thus producing no sound.

Now, I'm not sure if you can actually do this with a plane and sonic boom (we haven't talked about it), so I have no clue. But it's a possibility. And I do know that there is technology that takes in sound, matches it and then gives off completely out-of-phase waves, to cut down on noise. At least, that's what my physics teacher has told me.

As you both go to school in the same province, that makes sense :P

A sonic boom can never be ridden of (i am no physics genouse but i know this much). A sonic boom is created by air coming back together after being split. Unless they make it so a plane dosen not split the air as it travels through it, the sonic boom will always exist.

Surely though it wouldn't be able to emit the cancelling waves at such an amplitude that it would cancel out such a huge noise though?

All sound uses waves to move, and that air creates those waves necessary, but as Anesthesia said, it might not be feasible to emit waves at that amplitude

Hey, I'm slightly familiar with this. I have some research notes I saved in word perfect about sonic boom and other sound waves.

Here is a pic of a F/A-18 jet breaking the sound barrier. talk about complete silence

Just wodnering if what i know to be where a sonic boom and how a sonic boom is created is true. What im saying is that it would be impossible because the sound is made (of course its a sound wave) when the plane passes through air, thefore splitting the air, and then the air coming back together, thefore making the sound.

My perfect isn't being so perfect right now :( *bangs head on pc* jk

@lionheart, yeah I remember something about when the jet hits a certain speed. I can't put this good science terms, but, it's like the jet goes fast enough where it goes through another deminsion or level if you may say.

Correct me if my terms aren't near accurate, I'd hate to give the guy wrong info.

It goes faster than a sound waveand they start to lag behind it? Is that what you were getting at ? :P

Im guessing if they fly like near the edge of space, then there would hardly be any sounds there.

I mean, planes that do fly in this altitude are mostly used for high altitude bombing or reconaissance.

They can just fly at sub-sonic speeds, then go up high and speed up from there.

As for current planes, the Stealth Fighter's engines are dampened, but they are not super sonic...

Also, I think ive heard about a plane called Aurora that can fly at over Mach 6 at high altitudes. But problem is, people arent sure if its real or not...

You can check those out I guess... :?

I really suck at physics, so I cant be much help. :(

I remember it as the doppler effect, I think.

The jet is making a lot of noise through the air as it flys. Since the sound can't catch up with the plane, it delays and you hear a sonic boom. As the sound it trying to catch up with the rest of it.

My guess is to really reduce air resistance and noise, maybe by structure and material.

Wow, I can't for the life of me think how a plane would escape the sonic boom. I can think of ways that it would be reduced but not eliminated altogether. However, at very high altitudes the "cone" of sound that creates the sonic boom will never intersect with the ground, so no sonic boom on the ground would be heard, but the sonic boom is still there.

Youve seen the picture, now watch the video. Shame about no sound on it, Id really love to hear a sonic boom. :)

I could see how they could reduce the noise of a sonic boom, merely by getting a smaller aircraft, thus less air being split (Refer to Lionheart0's picture to understand.), but I dont understand how it can be muted completely. :?

You have one hell of a set of speakers if you can recreate a sonic boom with your computer! :P

Last time I heard one I was walking up my driveway and had to lean against the basketball pole to keep from collapsing =\
