Vashinred
I am 17, and I know my Rights. Yet I cannot Decide If Passwords are protected in free speech. I know this may not apply in the real world where things that are incripted can be broken, But I am speaking about parents, School Computers, And minor's computers. For me, I've been wondering about this for 4 weeks. It started when I was posting on a Hevily Athiest Site becuase I love those sites. And my Father busts into the room and I made a Motion to Shut my Labtop Down (yes i Closed the Laptop top, sorry I didnt Tell this detail eariler) He, Being the expert in what ever it is he does, thought that I was doing somthing Wrong. I actully have no porn at that Labtop so I wasent worried about that. I could have just Opended the Computer back up and put in the password and shown him what I posted, But I felt I had a Right not To.. Of course this got me grounded and he wants to take it into a Laptop place where they can break your password (Can someone please tell me if places like this can actully break into your computer???) Now the Question is, Do I have Protection of My password. (By the way, My password Is pretty Much the Same for everything that I use that needs a password, So Gmail, Runescape, Yahoo, Googlepages, MSN, My computer Files, Freewebs, Etc) http://vashinred.googlepages.com/

willyhenriksen
Brute force attack, they try every possible combinations, they WILL break your password, the more characters you have in your pass the longer time it will take (There can be 35^x combinations, x=characters in password). If i were you i'd tell your dad and log in to prove there's nothing there :) Good luck. R.I.P. Shiva and Steve
katha610
its actually easier than you think to break a password (esp a windows) they will be able to, but if you have nothing to hide there should be no problem and your dad will be the jerk for not trusting you. bu if there's something, make sure it's gone
indy500fan
as for your rights, at age 17 (are you in the usa?) i dont think you are protected. i know its not the way it should be, but thats the way it is. i dont know if this deals with free speech rights either, probably something more along the lines of property rights. if the laptop is bought and paid for by you (with money you earned from a job, not from "allowences") you might have a small chance there. but its probably hopeless. bjbj1991
I think your safe from anyone breaking into your accounts. I do not believe that their is a keyloger built into any Windows computer or any OS so it would be imposible for them to keylog your passwords, the only way to do it would be an autologin internet file but because you enterd you pass I dont think you use those. he brute force methed is highly inefective and will take I think 70 days for a computer that can enter 10,000 passes a second just for a 7 long pass, most hosts wont even allow you to enter an incorect pass 10 times. What is he woried that you are doing anyway because people that check your comp for stuff could cost quite a bit of money?
Bubsa
I am 17, and I know my Rights. $5 says you don't. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.
MyPurpleCrayon
I am 17, and I know my Rights. $5 says you don't. I second that. You're a minor still, living under your parents. Therefore you abide by their rules. Now this isn't law but it's common courtesy, if you are going to live under their roof then you should follow their rules and not disrespect them... that is until you move out and you are supporting yourself. :P Ghost: I am prejudice towards ignorance, so that would explain why I appear to be so. You have no privacy "rights" from your parents as long as you are a minor.

I looked into it when my friend somehow got locked out of his account on his pc. Can't remember all the details, but asked around and yes it is possible I believe. And no it's not to do with a keylogger or anything like that.
Anesthesia
I've heard that too. Something to do with utilities named Cain & Abel or something like that, they do something to access the password hashes which you then have to somehow decrypt with another utility. Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.
Stuart_G
They could simply start up in safe mode, log into the admin account, which isnt set a password when Windows is installed, thats the case with me anyway, and they could just remove the password from your account from there. So yes, it is possible to remove your password if they want to.
Lionheart_0
You shouldnt have anything to worry about, but in this situation, i think they have a right to see, just incase they are suspicouse, cause since your a minor you shouldnt be looking at stuff, even if your not.
