Stereotyping on looks/clothes

Ragen

Recommended Posts

Usually people wear the kind of clothes/act the way to belong into a group, so they can be identified as one of the group, and so they can be stereotyped. Usually people only do this because of peer pressure. The first person to dress as a mosher/chav/emo, must have been ridiculed.

If you want people to see you as an individual, be yourself and don't follow the trend...

I try not to stereotype people, but it still happens. I probably do it at least once a day, on the subway, at school etc. I don't do it on purpose, I just automatically do it without even realizing what I'm doing.

Just a final thought which is actually kinda off topic. Is calling someone black wrong? In America they are African-Americans but are they called African-British in the UK? It seems to me that when you say things like black and hispanic and asian, everyone knows what you mean because they are universal and non-discriminatory (at least about a person's country of origin).

I've thought about that at times. On this state exam we took in my math class I noticed it said "Black or African American." Just a play on words thing but I thought it was funny.

I dont prejudge people, doing so is lazy, and can be bad for you.

The first time i meet any person i act ready for any situation, and what ever i make of that person, will come in time, not at first sight.

(except certain situations, such as the smokers at my school, they all stand out there, and basicly the same, will stare you down as you walk by, and make fun of random people, i try to avoid them when they in their smoking spot)

So you don't prejudge people, unless it's a certain group? Then it's okay to prejudge them...it's not lazy or bad. Right?

Huh? im saying its bad to prejuge, its just lazy and bad. But i ment for the certain groupe im kinda prejudging cause i know th ey are probably nice on their own, but when they all together, the smokers are a little mean.

(and i mean the smokers at my school)

My only stereotype would prolly be that if you look like a good person, you talk like a good person, you act like a good person, then you are a good person.

You really don't know me at all then, do you? :P

What?

Some people, like me, or perhaps Bubsa if the claim is correct, put on a facade and act like they're a good person, when in reality everything they do can be quite venomous. These can be people to watch out for who will most likely eventually hurt you... but then again, as long as they keep up the facade while you're around, all can be find and dandy for quite a while :D

Everybody hug and spread the love :D

I don't use the word [bleep] as another term for gay people though. Heck, I didn't even know the word [bleep] / [bleep] meant gay until I saw the movie BeCool. :? I use it as one of the more degrading insults I have for [wagon]es/[cabbage] for brains/morons.

An example was when a niner cracked a dumb joke at me a couple of weeks back. He said something about 'you want me to teach you? looks like you need help with your bike.' Then I just said 'don't be a [bleep]' to him constantly since he was trying to rebut back. Everytime he opens his mouth, i just told him not to be a [bleep]. He ended up just walking away lol.

Heh, I was walking through a town with one of my friends who happens to be of Hispanic origin. Some redneck comes by in a pickup and goes 'Git outta my way, ya stupid (n word).'

If you're going to be racist, at least get the race right. My friend just goes 'I'll chalk that one up to ignorance.'

I really wouldn't call it an era. It was more of a definitive time period during which dinstinctive characteristics were expressed in similar ways.

Wanna know why stereotypes exist? Because they're frequently correct.

All of the world is divided into cultures. We (or at least I) am a part of Western culture. Further than that I am a part of American culture and then nerd culture 8-) . Each person has their own cultural "address" which can help others identify what kind of person they are.

So you would like to be identified as an American nerd?

I am willing to bet that you have stereotyped before and would even do it now despite what you've written

Yes I have and still do, for example if I was in France and a man with a baguette was walking towards me, I would say "bonjour" as opposed to "good day" as in the circumstances he is more likely to understand the latter. What I don't stereotype people on is things that people may consider offensive. Using the French person as an example I wouldn't dream of thinking that he smelt before before getting close enough to tell.

Stereotypes are quick ways to judge someone's character. Considering that many people you meet you only meet for a short time, stereotypes help you know how to interact with them.

I agree about stereotypes helping you interact too but not about being able to judge character. For example if I got into a conversation with a "mosher" at my school I would what bands they listen to. However I would not avoid them as they may be moody.

I think people mistook me for saying that stereotyping is wrong. I don't think it is. However I think that judging someone based soley on the stereotype and abusing them/ ignoring them/ disliking them because of what you see is.

You failed to use a useful stereotype that tells you that most black people are very offended by the 'n-word'.

I also agree about there being useful stereotypes. Eg I wouldn't approach a man with a knife out or as you said, use the 'n' word to a black person as it may offend them.
