runesmithie
Just got a fairly old computer and I'm trying to pry the sucker open to salvage it's parts. Only problem is that it just isn't budging, it's built like a fort... Probably just a wild shot, but does anyone know how to dismantle an Acer case with ease and without destroying anything? (It's 40486 era) I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.
Greatsilverwyrm
Is it all put together with snap rivets? If that's the case, you're a bit screwed unless you have some specialty grinder or something..
tunaboy692004
look around the outside to see if there is a side without any rivits, if there is check inside to see if there is any visible rivits. If there isnt a side without rivits, your not getting in easily. Mabey your just missing a case lock, on somecases the locks are actually hard to find. Yeah, unscrewed the powersupply, pushed it in and there was a caselock in there, incredibly hard to get to... Anyways, now that's solved and I figured out I can't salvage anything, what should I do with it? Win95 is installed with few apps (Quickbooks pro is the only one that really comes to mind that doesn't come by default...) he computer has 32mb RAM and is somewhere in the 40486 line, I couldn't find the exact spec though... (512mb hd too :) ) I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.
tunaboy692004
All i would suggest is fix it up as best as you can, and make sure all the drivers are installed properly. And give it to a kid or something for their first computer Current Goals80/80 Fletching60/75 Woodcutting97/100 Combat

Diminished2b
Maybe spend some extra cash for some peripherals and build an arcade box, or a TV box, or some kind of device similar.
Guest GhostRanger
Sort of Off-Topic but my first family computer was an old Acer. I think we've technologically bonded or something...
Militaris
Probably not very useful, I leave my old computers lined up against the wall next to my bed. Can,t do much with them really.

Although, I probably wouldn't use smoothwall myself.
Anesthesia
DOS games is a great idea. Even with DOSBox some run too fast on my machine, though I've tried slowing them down. You could also use it for Folding@Home. Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.
Chris
You could also use it for Folding@Home. Had that running on a Dell PowerEdge EL575 (Pentium 75), It took days to complete 1 unit. Not a good idea doing something like that with an old machine. Notoriously Trollish.
tunaboy692004
Hmm, mabey software testing. If your a devoloper, you could use it to test your software for compatability. Current Goals80/80 Fletching60/75 Woodcutting97/100 Combat
