Can someone explain to me how exactly I can go about using a guilded alter?

Use the bones on the altar when both burners (marble) are lit for the maximum xp.

Its very fast and you use it by lighting the 2 incense burners with 2 marrentils then use your bones on the altar :P You need the incense burners or higher for the best prayer xp.

And do the burners burn out after a while, or if you leave your house?

can u use a friend's guilded altar, or do you need to make your own for it to work?

The burners burn out after about a minute or two. And you can use a friends altar.

 

 

 

If you leave the house, usually you get the long pause at it the "loading" No-place-like-home screen comes up, and everything is reset. Doors are closed, things dropped are gone, and burners are out.

 

 

 

If you come back fast enough, (Really fast though. Tele to Edge, grab bones, click house tele tab.) sometimes it doesn't reset, the "loading" screen pops you right in, and all the doors are still open, and the burners are still lit.

what i dont understand is how does this method beat ecto? because you get less exp per bone on this than ecto

Speed-wise, it's a lot faster. Exp wise, Ectofunctus is still greater.

 

 

 

 

 

Compare... 3.5x exp in 2 minutes compared to 4x exp in 5...

For the record, you do not need to have the most expensive incense burners to get the 100% prayer boost (on top of the altar's base prayer boost). Torches and Candle lights don't boost at all, but any of the three kinds of incense burner (mahogany or whatever) are fine. Be sure to light both of them, though - one burner gives only a 50% bonus.
