Please read that thread first to undertsand.

BUT HOLD ON A MINUTE BUBS! How do I record my entry?

Grrr, would you like me to spoon feed you too? Humbug, well, I suppose a tutorial won't hurt.

First up, you'll need a microphone. Sorry, but singing telegrams are prohibited.

Now, if you already know how to record audio files into an mp3, great! If not, here's a tutorial to get you started:

  • Tutorial Contents:

    Step 1: Downloading the program

    Step 2: Downloading the codec

    Step 3: Recording your greatness

    Step 4: Saving and Uploading

    Tip.it 1: Amplify your recordings

    Tip.it 2: Add a backing song

Step 1: Download the freeware program Audacity here.

Now, we all know how to install programs, right? Good, let's continue.

Step 2: In order to encode in mp3, you'll need a codec. "Spare me your techno lingo!" I hear you cry, but alas, it's really simple!

First, go to where you installed Audacity. That's probably for us Windows folk: C:\Program Files\Audacity

Next, right click and select New Folder, like so:

tutorial2md3.jpg

Name this folder whatever you want and then enter it.

Next up, the codec! Click this link and save to a location.

Where to save it? You guessed it! That new folder you created, alieky so:

tutorial3nr5.jpg

In you go amigo!

Step 3: Sound as a pound on a merry go round! You're ready to wow the judges!

Recording couldn't be easier, simply open up Audacity and you'll be greeted with this screen:

tutorial4ow0.jpg

See that big red dot circled? That's your record button. Simply make sure the two things marked by the arrows are set as they are on the screen, the input being your microphone and the detection rate right up! Now you may sing to your heart's content! Sorry, I can't give a guide to this section, as you can probably tell by my singing efforts >.<

See all those jiggly lines appearing on screen, that's your voice! Fun hey! But try not to get too carried away and stick to singing!

Step 4: Finished? Alrighty, let's save this beaut!

First off, you want to select file -> export as mp3:

tutorial5gm0.jpg

Now, you may be asked by the Audacity Gods to locate some weird thing like lame_enc.dll...

tutorial7jq5.jpg

Wait a minute, that's the codec you downloaded! Groovy! Remember where you saved that? Well locate it!

Now you see, this is my trick, because you can save your mp3s next to your codec!

tutorial6hu8.jpg

See? I'm more than just a pretty face \'

Hey, what's this st00f?

tutorial8gc3.jpg

Well this is actually really handy! Now you can label your mp3. If you put your name and everything on we can recognise your work much easier.

Now it's time to upload the song! There are plenty of free, easy to use upload sites. Here are just a few:

http://rapidshare.de

http://mega-file.net/

http://www.megaupload.com/

And of course you can always upload it to your webhosting if you can! :D

Tip.it 1: Is your recording playing back too quiet? Then amplify your music!

tutorial9pd0.jpg

All I've done here is highlighted my recording, by clicking on it, selected the "Effect" menu and clicked amplify. You can then make it as loud as you wish.

All entrants are free to use the other effects available, but remember, sometimes less is more!

Tip.it 2: Why not add backing music to your recording?

If you've found an instrumental mp3 or converted a MIDI file of the song you've sang, you can import it into audacity like so:

tutorial10sz8.jpg

Simple hey! BUT HEAR THIS YOU GRIMEY MORSELS!

You will not be marked down by submitting an acapella (without music) entry in the early rounds. The final 12 idols will be given an instrumental mp3 of their choice to import by their mentors. They may ignore this, but it may effect the public vote!

At least, I think that.

I was considering suggesting a karaoke party sort of thing for OT events but then I realised I didn't know how the hell to have one. Good call you guys, I'm definately in this.

Can you play a song low and sing over it or do you have to find a song without the lyrics and sing them? Thats harder to do.

Bdave.png

Cool, I have recently made a mix and I am getting into this stuff. I will record with a song and then try and find mp3 without lyrics. I have a soar throat atm so I will stick to something with deep voice, like nickleback or red hot chilli peppers. This just gives me practice as I'm helping out the dj on karaoke at the bar I work at on Friday :P

Actually the results are better when you sing over music without lyrics.
