Barihawk
Thailand's military ousts prime minister AP - 35 minutes ago BANGKOK, Thailand - Thailand's army commander staged a coup Tuesday night and ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra while he was in New York, circling his offices with tanks, declaring martial law and revoking the constitution. Gen. Sondhi Boonyaratkalin, who is known to be close to Thailand's revered monarch and is a Muslim in this Buddhist-dominated nation, will be acting prime minister, said army spokesman Col. Akara Chitroj. The General lost the election a few months ago, so he resorts to this. Yay. My heart is broken by the terrible loss I have sustained in my old friends and companions and my poor soldiers. Believe me, nothing except a battle lost can be half so melancholy as a battle won. -Sir Arthur Wellesley

If the PM as you say rigged the elections (keyword elections) would their monarch's power be absolute? And btw their king has always been there ever since the late 40s/early 50s... He has seen dozens of governments, democratic or not. And he remains a figure head. Or right now, probably being used by the generals... Its too early to say. :-k The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak. 1_man_army
Its a shame to see democracy fail like this, even if the previous government wasn't perfect it has to be better than another oppressive military junta. The UN or NATO have to take some sort of action here (I mean economically not militarily) to put pressure on the Thai military. Although realistically they wont as they're pre-occupied at the moment with Iran, Iraq & to some extent North Korea, and the fact that they are seen as lame-duck organisations. It's especially sad since Hungary could be moving towards revolution due rioting in Budapest after he admitted lying to win their last election. ------------------------------- Well, i've never really cared about Thailand. Why do people like this bother to post in these topics? (other than to get on additional post) As you said yourself, you don't really care and your obviously lacking in maturity to discuss the issue even if you did care - "I would've loved to have been there, cause I likes tanks." Sorry if Ive been ranting like this a bit lately but Im slowly but surely getting tired of sort of rubbish that I shouldn't bother responding to. Barihawk
Jak, their sense of timing was a no-brainer. Would a thief rather strike a home when the master is home, or out on vacation? With the PM out of the country, the military could effectively take control with the communication that comes from the chain of command broken. BlueTear
To be honest, I wouldn't get to locked on the "religious identity" of the apparent Person In Charge, because Thai as a country just doesn't have a % of muslims that would allow the formation of a Islamic Republic in the pacific. Possibly a division of the nation, but by the looks of it - from afar and with little prior knowledge of the internal politics of the nation - it'll either turn into someone's attempt at getting elected again, or just "your average military dictator". And Ghost... I don't browse these forums as much as I once did, but I tend to at least peek into the political/religious threads because there's a chance I might learn something, I like learning things. At the moment though, I can't recall a single instance where someone has implied that christianity, as an organized religion, promotes the murder of civilians, advocates oppression in various forms etcetc without anyone objecting. Quote me an instance? -This message was deviously brought to you by:
dogfever
I think a lot of people are ignoring the simple facts that: a. Thailand is not an Islamic state, Buddism is also a strong force there. b. This was a bloodless coup You surely can't criticise a nation for rising up to overthrow a corrupt government (I think in some US states such a right is still enshrined in law). Such corruption and electoral fraud it tantamount to dictatorship and recent history shows that the US and UK have taken a selectviely strong line on dictatorships. I personally don't object to people criticising religions provided that their arguements are well thought out, these were not well considered arguements. To associate any human behaviour other than the following of sacraments etc. is to make an unwarranted assumption that religion dictates human nature. I would suggest it would be difficult to find a mainstream religion the followers of which have never been associated with violent behaviour. So my main arguement here is that to associate any religion with peaceful or warlike behaviour is unsound. Maybe statistically one is more warlike than another but sich a point is rather trivial overall. People can be terrible no matter what god they pray to.
