What should I take pictures of for photography class?

Featured Replies

Tomorrow being Monday, I get to check out a camera until Wednesday, that gives me 2 days to look for some good pictures that will hopefully get me a good grade. Well, since I'm quite the "newbie" at such, hardly ever handle a camera (the only ones I have ever used were disposable), and am not sure what I should look for, maybe you could help me. To give you an outlook, I believe the photos will come out black and white (not sure, I'll have to find out tomorrow), and I live in Michigan (to give you an idea of what is around me), I have some woods, but nothing "special" around my house, though there is a nature walk that I should probably check out. And, these cameras have no zoom feature.

Stand on concrete. Jump, and try to get a picture of your shadow.

Take a picture of the sunset through the trees.

Some things are best left unexamined.

yea, sunset/sunrise, I wanted to try that, a few days ago it was shining just perfect on the trees, since there was a house in front of the sunrise it only put it's light on half of the tree.. looked great.. and last year we had the northern lights (i believe that's what they're called) go over, that would have been great :D

Take a look at some of these great pics, if ya got woods with flowers or colorful wildlife im sure theres something to be found

Huh, Michigan eh? Me too.

Anyways, knowing art teachers you can get away with retty much anything. My English teacher last year also teaches photography and he showed us some of the most "powerful" pictures. One was of 3 champagne glasses, two tipped over and one standing. Just make sure you have an object in the picture to look at and the teacher will find something "powerful" about it no matter what.

Just a few hints, ive been in photography for a long time so hear me out.

Sunsets are an easy pass, take a photo of a nice sunset with some senery and you'll get a pass, but you prolly wont get a great grade.

Sunsets are really over done, they are easy to take a photo of since the camera will focus itself on the sunset and they're always there...

A bit harder to get a good photo are common objects, like said a wine glass, shoes or a computer. Harder than a sunset and still these prolly wont give you a great grade unless your a pritty ace photographer.

The real grades are in moving objects, capture a moment in time.

A few old people at a caf̮̬̉̉ laughing, A deer staring at you in the woods.

A hunting dog (one of the pointers) from the side...

These are just a few things from the top of my head, these can be hard to get a good shot of as you will more than likely only get 1 or 2 shots to choose from, but they look the best.

Remember to keep the contrast just right, NEVER use flash.... If you dont have a good flash on a camera get someone to hold a differnt artifical light, i find lower end cameras with flash come out with photos that have a sort of torch affect with the corners getting darker and only the middle being light although i havn't played around with too many lower end cameras of late.

I hope this helps

4 replies in near 20 mins, this is flowing with help ::' have to go to sleep, maybe I can ponder over these things, and by tomorrow, have the camera, check this thread, and go on a photo frenzy, though, I'm guessing I wont be able to take any pics until tuesday morning or something.. darn!, that's not going to work out, how can I go out and take pictures before I need to go to school :( this always happens to me, think I have everything going great, then I find a problem.

Have you been taught anything about composition? (At least in my experience with my current 2D design teacher) You should be able to get away with something if it is compositionatly sound. I.E don't do something boring, try and make it interesting but make sure it stays ballanced.

But, that being said, i'm not sure what grade your in and how big of a deal this photography class is. If it's just some little class in middle school or something than get something that will catch the teachers eye.

However, try and find something that you think looks great. Be it an amazing sunset or even a scene just set up right.

couldn't have said it better myself nadril =D> =D> ... (unless I quoted it... ugg why didnt i quote it... :wall: )

Take photo's of things that attract your eye, differences in shadow, losts of contrast etc. I only really have expeirence in b&w photography, i find that alot more fun.
