Guest GhostRanger
I think I'm going to have to part ways with most of you all on this. I would much rather see bad flaming than good. Think about it. What is more entertaining than opening up a post to see someone keyboard-yelling like a 5 year old? A good example of bad flaming can really cheer me up on a bad day. caligula101
Oh, and even 'good flaming' gets old soon on this forum. Perhaps it's even the worst type. I get so tired of these people who think they are 'good flamers'. Always posting in the same "I am better than you attitude" etc. And then they think they are smat because they have an 'intelligent' flame, and then you even get these people walking away with them and adoring them saying that 'good flaming' is an ART! That's not good flaming, Daan. I belive there are only 2 or 3 good flamers in this forum, and I'm not one of them, if that's what you understood I meant. Good flaming takes great amounts of intelligence, sense of irony and perspicacity. I'll take that as a compliment. (joke)

BlueLancer
The problem we have is not the fact that people do flame, it's the fact that they don't do it right. Indeed. Good flaming is priceless, and flaming thoughtfully is an art. I'm so angry because tons of ignorant teens don't realize this, flaming does not mean you run around cursing everything you see, calling a random person names then you think its clever or funny. That just makes you a jerk. I recommend reading a select few articles from maddox.xmission.com, it is really skillful flame (read: rational criticism) against something the author believes to be completely innecessary or irrelevant to modern world. Other than that, flaming does not belong to a rational discussion about philosophy or mathematics or something of the sort (unless some person clearly doesn't have a clue what he's talking about, you can use counter-points to prove him utterly wrong and he'll just crawl back to his hole). Lack of respect to other people makes you look ignorant and rather immature, especially if you're the one provoking. I wish more people understood this. I've never even heard of that word. One major mistake "good" flamers make is using "big words" to get their point through. Just because you typed Antidisestablishmentarianism or Floccinaucinihilipilification on an online forum, it doesn't mean your IQ just rose by 50 or your post achieved heavenly status. nik
I think my definition of flaming is different from other people's definition. If someone is attacking another on a personal basis, that is flaming. If someone is attacking a opinion of a person, the knowlage of the person on the subject, or other reasonable concerns, then great, thats debate. Thats just my take on it. Come on![/rant] Don't get me wrong, I don't mind some flaming every now and then, but there are users who just have the same attitude in every reply they make. Even when there isn't even a reason to 'flame' yet. Ghostranger: You seem to fit this role. To flame, just to flame, is not a good enough reason for me. Also, you are mistaken with the statment that I take this too seriously, I DONT post here enough to care! Friends of myn come here, so I browse in spurs, I just think being mean for the sake of being mean is wrong. Frankly, if you want to flame me to hell, I dont care, its the internet, there are tons of other places to go, tons of other things to do. Don't make the mistake that I am personally offended by the flaming that is happening, because I am not. I merly am disgusted by the fact that people are mean, just to be mean. I completly agree with that, although I would extend that to polotics and religon, etc. C'YEA H0'KAY

Past a certain point, some posters just forget that people thought they were funny because of what they said, not because of who's name tag was next to it. The really weird thing is that people seem to forget that as well; Some posts that would've been shot down for pure stupidity faster than you could figure out how to spell "newbie" three different ways, survive - and are tolerated - only because of who's name is under the author tag. As if there's some sort of "immunity" gathered from worth-reading posts made months ago. *shudder* -This message was deviously brought to you by:

Who was it that said it was about egos? because that's definitely why I do it. I'm going to be honest, I feel much better about myself after a well-articulated spray of flames. I think it's because I'm so proficient in antidisestablishmentarianism.

Once you get a certain amount of quality posts or you are just well-known (or a mod or whatever), there does seem to be an aspect of 'diplomatic immunity' kicking in. I doubt that could survive for long here on off topic at tip.it though (3 ways to spell newb) I use a couple of forums at least 10 times larger than tip.it and moderate a few, and the guys who got 10,000+ posts and are well known in the community for providing good links and downloads etc. are practically free to roam the forums as they have the 'popular support' to do so. Nobody will lock their 400 page "Do you prefer macaroni over spaghetti' thread while a newbie posting the same thread there gets the lock in a matter of minutes along with a flash of delicious flame. Faux
Debates aren't bad (probably one of the reasons why I like going to forums), but when you have some personal attacks and just posting for the sole reason of annoying everyone, that's when it just gets lame. And yes, some people do tend to try to use uncommon words to sound smart. I don't know if they think they're fooling everyone, but it just sounds like they just go to thesaurus.com and use the rarest word they can find. It is very, how do we say, caustic. :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::
