Guest mmortalone
My mom recently returned from a week in Havana, Cuba for a confrence, and came back with many stories. Here are some: 1. All the buildings are falling apart, but look that they once looked amazing. 2. All the cars (sometimes filled with 10-15 people) are all old, yet a lot of them are in good shape. 3. There are anti-bush, vive castro signs up everywhere. 4. The face of Che Guevara is everywhere. 5. There are no streetlights, yet people spend all evening on the streets playing chess and other games. 6. Interesting story: The american embassy placed a ticker sign up in front of the embassy, right near the amphitheatre where castro speaks. The sign was always spouting anti-castro news. Castro didn't like this, so he placed an anti-bush sign covering it up, just about 3 feet in front of it. 7. Posada Carrilles is a propoganda hero for castro, who says he was fighting terrorism when he shot down the plane 30 years ago in bolivia. 8. She brought back a few different newspapers. one, called the Granma (the ship that brought castro to cuba during the revolution) had both an english version and a spanish version. The english version, however, is completely different than the spanish version. same week, completely different news. 9. The people there have no idea what wi-fi is, or the internet in general She described that the country is living about 30-40 years in the past. "Che lives" signs everywhere, old cars from about 30-40 years ago, etc. just some interesting things that most americans do not realize about our "friends" down under

Anyways, Cuba isn't even nearly as 'backwater' as North Korea, and they are both totalitarian communist regimes. I don't find it really too weird that they don't know about Wi-fi though, I'd say a minority of the people in the world know what it is.

caligula101
Wow big deal. The people seem content the way you described atleast. Playing chess and other games all evening without the corruption of the internet and various video games. It sounds a fine place to live. I'd rather live their than with the typical American family with the father that is the accountant the mother a housewife with the two darling children spoilt rotten by their rich parents. Who play video games all day never going outside. Whats wrong with the sense of community that they have, "omg they don't have a computer, it's the end of the world", some people are really quite pathetic if you put it in context to countries like Cuba. That wasn't necessarily aimed at you mortal as you didn't show your actual opinion on Cuba. More like the people that are going to post in this thread, glorifying America over it's friends "down under" as you say.

As I also implied being spoilt with your every need catered to brings out the worst of people making them lazy, incompetent and complacent. While having the minimum does not, infact it brings out the best, making people respect what they have and enjoy it.

pkr_92
well im half cuban so wut ive heard about cuba is almost as the poster as described. the houses are pretty garbage. the cars are well maintained because the have smart people there that fix them. only because they have no money for new ones.wireless internet is prettymuch german to them. they have no idea what that is. but they live decently there i guess. living in poverty does bring out the best in someways. but the worst in others. you steal more in general(dont leave some b.s. comment because half the kids i know that came from cuba steal more than others) you do enjoy the little things more so i guess its just about the same as anywhere else. its how your raised that counts. not how the country is.(although that does give an undeniably large factor into how your raised and how you concieve life in whole) supermonk wrote: To Jagex, your worth five dollars. No. please elaborate. my comment was off first hand experience That comment doesn't correspond to the reality. Most underdeveloped countries have good access to the internet and computers on the middle and upper classes. Only countries I can think of without much communication (read Internet, tv, computers...) access are real socialist countries, the worse african countries and a few asian countries, mainly on central Asia and Indochina. ^The most disturbing signature on Tip.it^Last.fm|HELLY KAYLA!|Oh the mehagurtz!|#Siencemakers"they care less about their spelling mistakes then I." - Lionheart"apinagez... let me

So are you trying to say that every person that lives in a developed country is lazy, competent, and complacent because they don't live in a third world country? I belive he is... Which is entierly false. Just because you live in a less developed country doesn't mean you will automaticly be "less lazy" on average than someone from a developed one. There are just as many lazy people in the USA and Europe as there is in Cuba.
BlueLancer
There are just as many lazy people in the USA and Europe as there is in Cuba. That's just wrong on many levels. First off Cuba doesn't have population obesity rates over 70%, and over there the average Joe must work harder to earn maybe 1/5th of the salary what an american could do with less effort. Then again it depends on what kind of laziness you're talking about. Of course there are lazy people everywhere, even in North Korea and Cuba. There are only a few hundred countries in the world, what are the chances that at least one person (or one hundred thousand, rather) are lazy? Not too small. But there are many more 'lazy' people in western countries than in Cuba simply because of their lifestyles that encourage laziness. In Cuba, most people still wash their clothes by hand, how many americans actually do that? Or how many ordinary people grow their own vegetables and spices in the US instead of ordering a pizza and a coke?
