January 1, 200719 yr When i say greatest male performances i mean individual performances, not overall. As in their performance could stand alone without the movie it resides in. There are quite a few on my list, which are in no particular order just the ones that have stuck with me over time. The first, and possibly my favourite is Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire , while the film alone is brilliant it's not his best (despite it being a damn good movie) in my opinion but he was simply outstanding. I'm not sure who is better, Leigh or Brando but both where perfect. His charisma made me miss him when he was off screen. I say Leigh's performance was on the same level too because while not as drawing as Brando's she held it together (as an actress) and did a fine job. Next is DeNiro in Mean Streets . This usually is swept over by films such as The Godfather and his later Scorsese work like Goodfellas and Casino. Raging Bull too gets more talk than this performance which is understandable as it's a more appealing film. However I think this is the perfect DeNiro performance and his best by far. His other are great but he hits the same level over time. This really set his benchmark which i feel he has not yet surpassed. His performance is like Brando's yet more over the top to the point of annoying occassionally but it still made me want to see him on screen, just how raw and new his acting is in comparison to a lot of other stars. A deserved Oscar for it too. My third and final peak performance is Orson Welles in The Third Man . He doesn't appear in it until much later on in the film yet the whole film is just a build up of his character and any other actor would probably have let us down. I can watch him deliver his lines over and over again he's a great showman and this is my favourite role for him. Again his character like the others are so good you can't take your eyes off them. The movie (being my favourite) contributes to his performance obviously as well as his theme tune which plays everytime he is near. I just love Harry Lime and this is the only man for the job. Theres my favourites, disagree or agree? Who are yours? With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.
January 1, 200719 yr The first one to pop into my head for great male performances was Al Pacino in Scarface. He had me sold with that Cuban accent... 122 Combat : 99 Hits : 99 Attack : 99 Strength97/99 Defence : 99 Fletching : 99 Woodcutting
January 1, 200719 yr Lol, I read title and first thing that popped into my mind was "Ron Jeremy", . ~~Let The Dragon ride again, on the winds of time~~I've always felt as if I'm the only person who can understand the concept of sarcasm on the internet.
January 1, 200719 yr Lol, I read title and first thing that popped into my mind was "Ron Jeremy", . HAHAHA YOU ARE MY NEW BEST FRIEND. Here's a cookie. Anyway, on topic. Laurence Fishburne in The Matrix trilogy...the way he spoke as Morpheus just captivated me, I started to believe everything he said. Mugutu
January 1, 200719 yr A little more recent and purist, but I think Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean just is one of the greatest acting roles of recent films. It really is brilliant, and like you say, you miss him when he's off screen in those films. Clint Eastwood in any Spaghetti Western he's been in. Just quintessentially tough and cool. Iconic. Michael Clarke Duncan in the Green Mile. Just so powerful and moving, he is John Coffey to me. Brando in The Godfather, again, iconic. "Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"
January 1, 200719 yr Author I don't think Pirates is much of a film, i mean it's alright but never entertained me that much. Although i do agree that Depp is good in it, and he's different which is something we don't have much of anymore. I prefer him in Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas though. January 1, 200719 yr Al Pachino in Dog Day Afternoon, Charles Chaplin in The Great Dictator, Malcom McDowell in A Clockwork Orange, Robert de Niro as the Raging Bull, George C. Scott as General Patton, Marcello Mastroianni in Una Giornata Particolare, Takashi Shimaru in Ikiru, Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, John Wayne in The Searchers, Gunnar BjÃÆÃâÃâörnstrand in NattvardsgÃÆÃâÃâästerna And I could go on and on, but I'll stop here. Signature by Maurice SendakWhen the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool, that's amore!
January 1, 200719 yr Only 3 performances really jump to mind right away when asked the question: Kevin Spacey: The Usual Suspects Marlon Brando: On the Waterfront Clifton Collins Jr.: Capote Pay special attention to the last one: it was a crime that he didn't get nominated for a supporting Oscar, and William Hurt did. An absolute abomination. If I were to pick one, it would be that.
January 2, 200719 yr Author I loved Capote, thinking about it he was very good as for greatest performances I;m not sure. I'll watch it again this week. With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. January 2, 200719 yr I really enjoyed Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump and Bruce Campbell in Evil Dead Trilogy :)
January 5, 200719 yr Edward Norton in fight club, shame he was overshadowed by pitt, though they both did great performances OT: Luring is sooo easy to avoid. That's what those nice signposts are for.
January 6, 200719 yr I'm sorry but that title gave me very bad thoughts... I liked Hugh Jackman in the X-Men movies... Then again I just love those movies lol
