Kill_Life
Hello everyone who reads this, Almost every week, it's the same story. We all thank Jagex for a new update (or most of us do). But the negative part... As soon as I see the times counting "System Update: 3:00", I think "oh no!". Why is this? Because their is a new battle in General P2P for who will get the first topic about the new update. Every time the same story, people try to get the first post and... Their will be several (sometimes 6) post aboutt he same subject. Now the forum-wars begins. Who his tread will stay open? People start flaming each others topic about they were the first and their topic should stay open. It really isn't fun for some readers, and what topic should they take? Cause if the topic they posted on gets locked, they need to repost again. I think this needs to stop. Isn't their a solution like only a few players may post the start topic. Or only a Moderater or Admin or ... can post the first one. So their won't be 5 topics about the same subject? I've discussed this with pokemama and she agrees and suggesting it posting here. ~Kill Life "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do"[Currently playing: K1ll L1f3]
misterxman
I haven't seen much flaming about who posted first. However it if does happen, action will be taken on them. So far most people have been ok with staying with the frist topic posted, so people don't have to wait for a mod to post about it. Guest
Who cares. Let them flame each other. If people are that desperate that they need to be the first to post an update, than that's pretty low. Their flaming isn't affecting anyone. And if it is you need to take a better look at life, as there's alot worse circumstances going on than just a few people arguing about who got their post of the update in first. The Mods can just delete or lock the people's threads who came in after the first persons, and if they tied the mods can just pick the person who they like the most. :P
Kill_Life
Some people don't care about it, others do. Personally, I don't like all that madness :( "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do"[Currently playing: K1ll L1f3]

pokemama
Okay, now how many admins/mods can post as soon as update arrives? VERY good question. They can't, lol. I've thought about this for the staff boards, and maybe it would apply to the public board as well. What if each week the mods created an essentially blank sticky for "this week's update" (such as "January 1-5 2007 update")? Users could post the update text in that same topic, and if more than one person posted it wouldn't be the end of the world. (If you hit the "preview" button you would quickly see whether someone had already posted it, by the way.) Replies would all be in the same place, so no merging issues. A mod/admin could come along later and copy the update text into the top post, and rename the title to show the date and actual update title. Just a thought. it's a lot easier to get over yourself when you look at intelligence the same way you look at beauty, or height, or eye color: being smart is easy, but being good is hard ... being smart is handed to you, being good is handed to *nobody*. You'd still get all those people who decide not to know what is going on and not read the rules of the forum and would still post the update in their own thread. You'd still be deleting these threads for the next few years. These things just happen in a large forum.
Kill_Life
The chance is big at least 1 mod is playing the game. But it's true, not everytime there will be one online. I must say, I like pokemama her idea. If you make it: For this week's update. People can start discussing there and later someone can change the title. Kiriyama
Pokemama's idea would work, less work as all the posts would be in the same place and I have only ever seen Fat Slug at an update once. Denizen of Darkness| PSN= sworddude198
Satenza
It may not work, people will speculate in there about what the next release will be ect So when it hits the actual discussion will be a few pages or posts in. With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.
Cruiser
I don't know how often the RS news tidbit on the front page is updated, but tying that into an automated forum post would void the need for mods to start the thread. Modifying the script to post "game update" news in the general stickies for discussion would do the job nicely. This all depends on how buried the PHP coders are unfortunately. darkblade986
Just make it a rule that no one but Moderators/Administrators should post the weekly update post... That would take care of it completely. That, or make a sticky a day or 2 before the update comes out. However, make a rule straight on the first post, in large print... DO NOT POST ON THIS THREAD UNTIL THE UPDATE COMES OUT When that update for the week comes out, people would then use that post to discuss the update. If anyone posted before the update came out, their post would be hidden and they would be given a warning. This would give the moderators/administrators a jump on the discussion topic by having it available, but "forbidden" before anyone else could post the update. Once you start doing this, I'm sure people would eventually start falling in line. And of course, once a moderator/administrator catches up to the new update, they could add in the text and de-sticky the thread, so that it takes its place as a regular discussion topic. don't worry, you are going to "hell" anyway. wanna race to see who gets there first?Officially reached 100 Combat at 1:33PM EST, June 14, 2007First Dragon Drop: Dragon Chain (Dust Devils) @ 10:48PM EST, July 14, 2008, lv113 combat
Cruiser
This is why jagex needs to create some kind of API or RSS feed for their website information. News and highscores information would benefit hugely from this but they refuse to. :( Anyway, some kind of automated 5/10 minute check for new game update news (like I brought up earlier) on the extended list would leave the mods free for other duties and could be a good reason for "Don't post updated threads" rules and so on if the system works correctly. People would just have to wait a couple minutes for the discussion thread to show up. Best method in my eyes because it becomes completely hands off once it's written and running. It would just be another thread in the sea of posts for the mods to look after. We do this with the IRC bot I work with and it does quite well announcing news to rooms.
Kill_Life
When you make a rule where you may not post new updates because the bot will do it, there is no problem :) If that would be possible, I would love it so much!!
