The Road to 99 Agility

The Road to 99 Agility, For Dogs, That is...

I was wondering how many people have heard of/practise the sport of dog agility. I just started the other day and wanted to see what people had to say.

Dog agility is a sport in which a handler directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. Dogs must run off-leash with no food or toys as incentives. The handler can touch neither dog nor obstacles, except accidentally. Consequently, the handler's controls are limited to voice, movement, and various body signals, requiring exceptional training of the animal, and the human. The courses are complicated enough that a dog could not complete it correctly without human direction. In competition, the handler must assess the course, decide on handling strategies and direct the dog through the course, with precision and speed equally important. Many strategies exist, to compensate for the inherent difference in human and dog speeds, and strengths and weaknesses of the range of dog and handlers. The handler tends to run a path much different from the dog's path. So for the handler, there can be extreme amounts of mental planning, for what turns out to be a quick run. Many things can go wrong though, and for any course, it is rare to be able to predict which team will perform best on a given day.

Did you build those things on your own?

Anyway, I watch those competitions on tv, and one thing I can say... Those dogs are FAST! The owners have to be in shape to keep up with those things.

122 Combat : 99 Hits : 99 Attack : 99 Strength

97/99 Defence : 99 Fletching : 99 Woodcutting

OMG. I love Dog Agility. It's pretty entertaining. I love the little tubes they run through :D. Good luck training your dog!

If you didn't make them, out of curiosity how much did they cost? And tell me if its in American/Australia/English etc dollars or not when you tell me the price. Thanks.

Oh and that sounds pretty cool, I wouldn't mind doing it with my dog. :)

Yes, I did build it, rather than pay $400 American.

It only cost me about $30 American, I bought some wood at Home Depot, then just nailed it together. I bought a tunnel (not shown)at a baby store and weave poles (didn't get a pic) at a sports store, theyre just fiberglass rods.

Ah cool. I might create my own obstacle course for my Jack Russell. Then all I got to do is try and get him to do it! ::'

Heh, nearly moved this thread before reading it... :XD:

Yeah i've seen things like that before, is that what they do at crufts and the like? I bet the dogs like it.

"Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"

he's not going to compete, just for some exercise

lol and how does he feel about that?

This thread boosted my compassion for dogs by 100% But if they like it, sure. Some tricks you see them perform on TV are miraculous for being an animal (they will backflip through 2 loops just because the owner said 'jump) and they totally understand each command they recieve. They're not dumb animals by any means.

Did you see the Purina dog challenge? It has several dog sports, including dog agility. They also had dog diving. It was on TV about a week and a half ago.

IIRC dog diving is basically a dog longjump but into water. The dogs chase after a rubber duck thrown by it's owner =)

exactly. The average for a dog that expects to come in 1st 2nd or 3rd is 28 feet to 30 feet. (distance)
