The fact that bass is easier is a common misconception. Sure, there's not as many fancy bass solos as there are guitar solos, but there are some insane bass players. knives669
I don't know where you could learn to play... I'm sure if you were to just use a search engine you would be able to find a pretty good site. The difference between an electric and bass guitar is that the bass guitar has a lower sound to it and it has four strings. An electric guitar (correct me if I'm wrong) has six. You also play them quite differently. You can use a pick to play them both (although a bass guitar requires a thicker, hardier pick) but, if you were to play them with your fingers, you would use your thumb to pick the strings of the guitar and your forefinger and middle finger to pick the strings of the bass. I know quite a few people who taught themselves how to play guitar and bass. IMO bass guitar is easier to play than electric. Hope I've helped you out. You forgot to mention Flea :P But anyway, it depends on how you're going to play it, an electric is probably more versatile and easier to play solo as well as in a band. However electric players are two-a-penny, so bass players are probably more on demand. "Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"

AThousandLies
Those of course are the traditional formats. Some artists use electric guitars with seven strings, four strings, five strings (but not many in comparison). Bass guitars also go up to seven strings (I think). If you want some information, use the good ole' Wikipedia article. Quite extensive.
hohto
Bass is easier, but still it requires a lot of hard work to become good at it. It's also easier to become a bad guitarist than a good bass player. I've never played bass, so this post is about guitars. Basically you could say the same things of basses too. Guitar is your most important thing after your ears, but you still shouldn't buy any 10,000$ custom guitar at first. I'd buy some cheap-mid priced guitar which is used. Used guitars are cheaper than new ones and if you buy it from your mate, it usually isn't that bad actually. You shouldn't buy an expensive instrument at first because they might be easier to play and thus not really make you to learn things and if you don't feel like this instrument is for you, an expensive guitar just wastes your cash. After sometime you should buy a better guitar if you feel like you need one. The easiest way is to get someone to teach you. Either a professional teacher or some mate who has been playing your instrument for a long time. Ok some pro guitarists haven't had a teacher, but believe me you should. With a teacher you always know what to do next, you will immediately hear it if you make some mistake and this way you won't get "trapped" if some hard part surprised you. Ok a good teacher isn't cheap, but it will pay itself back as a better guitar skills. It will also help you if you actually learn to read tabs. It's true that your ear can tell you better how to play some part, but tabs make your life easier. On your own time, try to play as much as possible. Try to repeat technics you learnt from your teacher, play along with some songs and try to learn from your mistakes. You just have to try again and again to become something. There are no easy ways. Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom for example plays still many hours per day and their albums have been sold a lot. Some guitarists even play at toilet. Don't get disappointed if some songs seem to be impossible for you to play. You won't become a new Van Halen in just few years. After learning the basics try setting yourself goals like "now I want to learn to play The Trooper". Set a goal after goal, remember that satisfaction kills advancing. Playing in a band is a good thing for your motivation. It's a lot easier to motivate yourself when you have people around you. It doesn't really matter if you are just a garage band that plays for fun as long as it motivates you. Of course if you want to become a pro, play with people who also want that. Just remember that you play because it's fun. If you someday wake up with a feeling that you don't want to play guitar today, then don't. In a long run it just kills your will to play. I'd rather die for what I believe in than live for anything else.Name Removed by Administrator ~Turtlefemm

Guest andyizcool
You forgot to mention Bass can go upto 5 or 6 strings although the common Bass is 4 strings as said before. I chose to play Bass because I know my thick fingers probably wouldn't handle the thin strings on an Electric. Most of my friends play Electric so there aren't many Bassists around giving you more chance of entering into a band.

Anyways I wouldn't even think of more than 4 strings when I started. There's enough work with four strings, get one or two extra ones when you are a skilled bassist :P I wouldn't choose bass because of thick fingers, just use a plektra or whatever you call that plastic thing in English .P I'd rather die for what I believe in than live for anything else.Name Removed by Administrator ~Turtlefemm

DragonFirenze
Blerch.. IMO bass is far harder to play that guitar. Simply because of the length of frets, width of strings etc. Sure, you dont get many bass solo's, but when you do they are FAR harder than guitar solo's. Ive been playing guitar for 11 years, and bass for 4. Bass is definatly harder. Lvl 80 construction. RPGoof
I would recommend using powertabs (different post, find it) I play guitar. Bass can be a bit harder, since there are a few different styles of playing notes (slap, pluck, etc.) and you get calluses on both fingers. Yet, most bass parts in a song seem to be fairly easy. Guitar is different. More popular, and not as many styles of playing a string. There are more places to learn guitar, IMO, since its more popular. I would recommend getting a cheap guitar first. Uh... i have no clue what to say next. Uhm.. BYE! (40 crafting, 40 range)

PlutoniumCross
The guitar would be slightly harder to start off with, but the bass is actually a little bit more difficult when you are a bit more experienced than a newbie. Overall with the real hardcore stuff the guitar is definitely harder. Theres a lot of modes, scales and techniques to learn, and they appear a lot more often than bass solo as such. If you wanna learn the guitar, start off by learning all the easy chords: E, Em, A, Am, D, Dm, G, C, B7, G7. Then you would wanna learn Power chords and Bar chords Then learn pop rock songs and learn to count. Then you might wanna try some easy solos. http://www.soundclick.com/rztheheretic
