EVE Online : I've been sucked in.

YES THIS IS A P2P GAME. YOU CAN PLAY THE 14 DAY TRIAL IF YOU EITHER A: HAVE THE NEWEST PC GAMER, OR B: GO TO http://WWW.MMORPG.COM , GO TO THE EVE ONLINE FORUMS, AND THERE SHOULD BE A POST FOR HANDING OUT KEYS.

YOU CAN ALSO GET A TRIAL FROM HERE: http://www.eve-online.com/pcgamer

Ok, bit of "backstory" before I get onto talking about this game. I've been an avid MMORPG player for the past few years. Started realy on runescape, played diablo 2 ( not an mmo, but eh...) and than hopped onto lineage 2.

Well, being 'fed up with L2 private servers and the game in general, I went searching.

Tried silkroad online. For a free game, yeah, it's good, and i'm almost positive the "end-game" is worth it. However, it was just too much grind, especialy coming off of a 45x rate Lineage 2 pvp server!

So I kind of.. wandered aimlessly, tried L2 again, couldn't get back into it. Than, I looked in my PCG. duh! I had a 14 free day trial to EVE Online. I downloaded the game, made my account, and set out

-----------------------

The Game

EVE Online is not for everyone, that I can tell you right off the bat. For example, someone expecting another easy grind-fest game, where you sit there and just kill 'crap for hours, this isn't the game for you. In fact, the hour long (ish) tutorial throws off many younger players (its well needed, even after it I had questions). However, that makes one thing...

...The comunity in this game is one of the strongest i've seen. Now, compared to Giants such as WoW (5million subscribers) EVE Online's mere 100k subscribers might not seem like much, even puny in return. However, from my first 2 days of playing it (which I plan, hopefully, to upgrade my account to a full after the 14 day trial is over), I noticed that the comunity is very helpful. There is none of this "omg noob I owned you kthxbai go cry now".

There's another reason why the comunity is so close, the server. Unlike most games, which host ton's of servers, with a max of 5k or so players online at once, EVE Online has one server, which easily get's 20k players on at peak times!

Anyways, i'm not trying to sound like an advertisment, but more of just saying that this is one of the best MMORPG's i've experienced, even from day 2 I could tell I was going to like it. There is no "grind" that is, unless you want there to be. The creators of EVE Literaly made it so the world is open to you. Start Companys, be a space pirate, a bounty hunter, hell, even be involved in large CEO Scams (in which a few large ones have happened). The creators take very little involvment with what's going on in the game, that is, execpt for helping newbies out. On numerous occasions in the "rookie help" channel I was helped by a GM or Mod.

Finaly, before the pictures and other good stuff, the games PvP has risks. Large risks. There is no "oh i'll go respawn and be safe" When you die, your ship = boom. Hope you had insurrence, which "may" cover some of the cost, not counting all of those guns and fancy implants you had. Your character is now "dead" and you are forced into a clone of your self's body. Makes PvP incredibly intense.

sooo... screenshots:

And to think, this game came out in 2003.

Well, anyways, currious if anyone else has played EVE Online, and if they do or didn't like it? I know one thing, it isn't for everyone :) .

Well... I can trust you more than anyone else.

So I'll try it out, link please?

If you want a 14 day trial, but don't have a PCG magazine try posting in the "EVE Online Forums" on http://www.MMORPG.com . They have a thread there that's for giving out 14 day trials.

And just telling you now, don't be afraid to ask questions! I had to ask (numerous) questions to others. :)

edit: It's a normal $15 a month after the 14 day trial (which btw, you need either a PCG Or someone to give you a key! Keep that in mind.) Although I think if you buy enough month's worth it's like $12 a month. :)

Oh..

It costs.

Lol, yeah, it does. I'll make that more clear in my post.

It's deffinitly well worth the cost, i'm only on my 3rd day of the trial, but 'tis worth it :).

Nice post Nadril. Makes me want to try the game now.

Those are actual in game screenshots?

I've seen a pc gaming magazine review on the game, but didn't think to highly of it. I will try to get a trial, because I'm not too sure about paying for something I know little about.

Didn't read my edit. lol :) .

you could easily play this and silkroad both. You see, this game doesn't revlove around grinding for levels and such, infact, you realy will only want to worry about money. You train skills, yes, but skills take real time to train.

For example, I was going to train my frigate level to level 2, so I could use a more powerful ship. So I went to upgrade, and it took 3 hours to upgrade. Durring the 3 hours, if I didn't feel like doing (whatever) In what I had, I could have litteraly logged off, played (whatever, silkroad/FPS/whatever) for 3 hours, gotten back on and my skill would be trained.

Like I said, it's all about what you make with your time. You can realy do about anything in it. For example, if I get some of my friends playing, I plan on doing a bounty hunter sort of guild, or just group. Players can place (real) bountys on other players head, so when you kill them that time, you automaticly get wired the money from that player who had placed the bounty!

It means that reputation is a huge factor in the game. You can be an [wagon], yeah, but your going to get blasted everywhere you see. However, if you become too trustworthy you may get backstabed in a large corperate scheme, much like the real world.

EDIT:

@ Phil : Yeah go to that http://www.mmorpg.com site and try and get a free key. You'll need to sign up, and probaly wait a little, but should be worth it. Or you could go out and buy a pc gamer lol :).

double edit: Yeah, they are real time screenies. They have some movies made purly in game (no editing but for music) on their site.

Or you could go out and buy a pc gamer lol :).

I'm guessing that the USA pc gamer is a different version from the UK version?

But yeah thanks. Will probably be looking further into the game :)

I've been absolutely hooked too for 9 months or so. And to anybody looking for a game and wouldn't mind putting their $15 to work every month, I would definitely suggest trying it out.

I can email anyone interested a 14 day buddy trial account, I wouldn't suggest posting your email here, but if you can pm it to me or enable it in your profile I can get one to you.

A few awesome videos for you guys to check out of you are interested

Sounds cool, but anything over $10 a month is too much. :? Have you tried Guild Wars? Its f2p and the graphics are BEAUTIFUL. You get to choose every detail about your character, eyes ect.

I played guild wars for a couple of months.

I was a leader of a (somewhat) good guild, [GoL]. Well, I can tell you, yeah I had fun with GvG's (we were all on ventrillo, was great) so we had a blast then, but trying to find a party in the tombs? (after an incredibly short RPG adventure, I beat the game about 4-5 times in those ... 2 1/2 months I played).

What I didn't like was the PvP in general. For orginized, non-risk pvp it was nice. Had a good system, but the problem was finding a team. Now, i'm a good player, hell i'm not trying to be stuck up here, but I was probaly in the top %10 in the game as far as PvP goes. Thing is, I liked to play un-common builds. I remember I was one of the first Air elementalists I had ever seen in the game, and rocked like hell. Than I saw a bunch more of them :( , so I switched back to fire after learning a few tricks (such as getting off 3 Meteor showers in a short period of time, If I haden't quit I was working on a build, Me/Ele that if I could give enough mana could get off 3 meteor showers in about the time less than 1.

Anyways, finding a good team sucked, bad. Everyonce and a while I'd find a good team, but 95% of the other time the team was filled with newbies, noobs and player's who just plain... were bad. And single PvP wasn't an option.

The reason I ultamitly quit, other than lack of stuff to do (after getting the full 20k or whatever armor and doing fissure a crapload of times you run out of stuff) and my guild dying out, it was because PvP ended up being no fun. There was no risk involved. It was like "wow, if I die, anywhere, nothing bad will happen." So it made death such an un-important factor, except in large matches such as GvG's. But even then, it wasn't like you were loosing actual ingame cash (such as in EVE, if you die, your ship == Boom, gone. Need insurence, but that doesn't cover everything for guns /ect.)

DarkRider, what's your name ingame dude? I've been playing for only a few days now, but starting to get the hang of it lol. Have been mining

:D .

the server they run this on is amazing. Has something like 70 top of the line AMD 64 processers in it ;o.

sweet :).

My friend will just started playing today, he's loving it already. He's getting a ship, has a lot of storage (for it's kind), but 3 slots for rocket launchers and a turrent slot. So now when he mines, if anyone decides to disturb him ... BOOM!

 .

I got a ship today, a Punisher. Has 3 slots for turrents, so I outfited it with 2 close range lasers and a medium range one. It's preaty crazy when i'm fighting npc pirates. Than I have a sheild regenerator, and a core recharger to recharge my core (because lasers / sheild regen take its power). Than I have 4 cargo enchancers :D . Not bad for a 3rd day playing.

but yeah, i'm loving this game and from what I've seen, anyone who gives it a try and doesn't give up the first 10 mins loves it. (The begining tutorial is long and sometimes booring, but pay attention! It will avoid you from having to ask a lot of questions, and helps a lot)
