  1. I think calling it a theory is giving it too much credit. Even if time was constantly repeating, I see no reason why everything would turn out the same.
  2. Justice seeks to restore harmony, revenge (while it can result in the same thing) seeks to injure. People seem to be taking joy in the idea that this man should die slowly and painfully which I find abhorrent. I don't think that any action should result in someone being considered or treated as subhuman.
  3. This is my own view, nothing relating to the bible, but this piece of scum in question raped and killed 2 innocent girls, I see nothing that can justify allowing him to live. Also factor in that keeping him in jail costs huge amounts of money that could be put into healthcare, so killing him could save 2-3 lives by taking 1 that IMO doesn't deserve to live anymore. I won't get started on arguing against the death penalty, since it's been done extensively and eloquently by Ginger in the dedicated thread already. Killing him is one thing, but when people start going on about splattering his brains all over the walls or boiling him alive (or whatever has been said) then that goes beyond justice and into the realms of twisted revenge.
  4. It's a little frightening how fast and low otherwise civilised people will sink when cases like this come up. Why return barbarism for barbarism?

I've been reading Pictures for Sad Children, and the first lot of comics seem to be based on (or at least referencing) The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Elliot. http://www.picturesforsadchildren.com/i ... comicID=31 "Let us go then, you and I, When the evening is spread out against the sky Like a patient etherised upon a table" http://www.picturesforsadchildren.com/i ... comicID=32 "The yellow fog that rubs its back upon the window-panes, The yellow smoke that rubs its muzzle on the window-panes Licked its tongue into the corners of the evening," http://www.picturesforsadchildren.com/i ... comicID=33 "In the room the women come and go Talking of Michelangelo." http://www.picturesforsadchildren.com/i ... comicID=37 "For I have known them all already, known them all: Have known the evenings, mornings, afternoons; I have measured out my life with coffee spoons;" http://www.picturesforsadchildren.com/i ... comicID=43 "Time to turn back and descend the stair, With a bald spot in the middle of my hair" http://www.picturesforsadchildren.com/i ... comicID=44 "To say: I am Lazarus, come from the dead, Come back to tell you all, I shall tell you all- If one, settling a pillow by her head, Should say: That is not what I meant at all. That is not it, at all."
  6. Dawkins could be described as more of an evangelical atheist perhaps. I would reserve the term antitheist for people like Christopher Hitchens, who not only does not believe in the existence of a god, but is glad there's no such thing because he doesn't like the idea. The main difference is that Dawkins mostly opposes religion, whereas Hitchens writes at length about why he's happy there's no such thing as god.
  7. His better known books are about religion, not about atheism. There's a chapter or two devoted to a few myths about atheists, but that's about it.
  8. Being stuck behind someone who walks really, really slowly.
  9. Because I support individualism :-w (You just got owned.) Individualism is a stance which opposes outside influence when making decisions, so clearly you don't support it. Sharing interests with other people does not make you any less of an individual. What you support is non-conformity for the sake of it.
  10. Has anyone else been tempted to reply "... Not that I'm inadequate. My deepest fear is that I am powerful beyond measure.. [and so on]"? I've never even seen the film and it's the first thing that popped into my mind.
  11. Wow, that's absolutely ridiculous. If you stopped liking a band because of a non-musical issue (and not even an ethical one like vegetarianism or something, which I could sympathise with a little more) then you can't have been that into the music in the first place. Can you explain the thought process to me? I really can't understand.
  12. Because all the "loser" kids at my school started liking disturbed because of GH What do you care?
  13. I would have to contend that Pink Floyd only became 'Pink Floyd' as people know them after (and arguably because of) Syd's departure. Of course I love Piper at the Gates of Dawn and the like, but I have to consider them as something other than Pink Floyd. The Disturbed story makes absolutely no sense. You didn't mention anything that might have changed or influence the band's music, you just said you hate them because other people like them, which is a loathsome attitude to have.
  14. People should be banned from using Lux Aeterna as background music. It can make anything sound like impending doom.
  15. That's absolutely ridiculous. I don't really have any fears, which is not to say I'm fearless or even especially brave. If I had a gun to my head I'd be scared, but I'm not afraid that it's going to happen.
  16. agree!he could play with his teeth o.O and although he was left haanded,he used a righthanded guitar to make it "hard" for himself The right handed guitar was strung backwards to emulate a left handed guitar. There wouldn't have been a huge difference in the playability, other than slightly limited upper fret access. On my Strat the top cutaway starts halfway through the 17th fret, but you can still reach past it without too much difficulty. Back on topic, I'll have to stick with my usual answer and say that I love me some Ritchie Blackmore.

Wow, those lastplace comics were hilarious.
  19. Hmm. You're obviously a pretty girl, but why are you posing like that?
  20. A close group of friends trumps a large group of acquaintances by far. deloria, I still think that's a bad attitude. Yeah, I think it's something you learn over time. I can't think of anything more important than the few close friends I have.
  21. I'd contend that Nirvana's Unplugged album shows their (perhaps only just blossoming) superior musical qualities. I've always had more of a thing for Nirvana, i'll always remember the first time I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit and the way it made me feel. Sorry I didn't really make myself clear. Nirvana are more 'musically talented' than Pearl Jam in the same way that Bob Dylan is more musically talented than, say, Yngwie Malmsteen - That is, on most (if not all) aesthetic levels. What I meant was that Pearl Jam blow Nirvana out the water when it comes to technicality, complexity and skill.
  22. Opening locks is not that interesting, will you please stop going on about it.
  23. She-Hulk was always green (not to mention promiscuous).
  24. I was with you on the first part, but you shot yourself in the foot a little with the last. It's equally ignorant to typify the 'stupid kids' like that. Generally discrimination does stem from ignorance though.
  25. Ha, that reminded me (the kidnapping part) about a little boy and his even littler sister I used to know. They were in a car with their mother and had stopped at a petrol station to fill up. When the mother went inside to pay, a guy jumped into the car and drove off with the two kids in the back. He didn't notice that they were there and only wanted the car, so he let them go when he got a chance.
