I would say range is not suggested unless you want to use a lot of prayer pots, if you use protect from magic and range the sea troll queen drains your prayer like crazy.

You don't have to unlock it to use them but you do have to unlock it to make the tablets. If you have a friend who can make them i suggest asking him or try trading materials for them or buying them

I wouldn't really recommend a cannon at the fire giants because you can be wasting alot of cannonballs on rats. If you're really rich buy a cannon and cannonballs and go to the dagonnoths under the lighthouse or to the caged ogres in the king lathas training ground
